Big4 FDD to Big4 Corporate Finance? Would I be dumb to turn it down?
Currently in B4 FDD and have an offer to go into B4 Corp fin. The team that I interviewed with does M&A advisory for deals ranging from 10m to 250m. So pretty much a boutique/LMM IB thats operates with the B4 name.
Am kind of hesitating here because I've been told my FDD experience can swing a better bank (BB/EB during a good job market). My experience at FDD has been solid as I've had numerous deals over $1B+ but obviously it's QoE work that doesn't translate directly into IB.
Just wanted your thoughts on this. My goal is to get into M&A at an EB. I am based in the US.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, making a move from Big 4 Financial Due Diligence (FDD) to Big 4 Corporate Finance can be a strategic step, especially if your end goal is to break into M&A at an Elite Boutique (EB). Here are some points to consider:
Deal Exposure: The Corporate Finance role you mentioned involves M&A advisory on deals ranging from $10m to $250m, which can provide you with direct transaction experience. This is valuable because it aligns more closely with investment banking work compared to the Quality of Earnings (QoE) focus in FDD.
Brand Recognition: Working within a Big 4's Corporate Finance team can leverage the firm's brand and network, potentially opening doors to larger deals and more significant roles in the future.
Skillset Development: The Corporate Finance role will likely allow you to develop a skillset that's more directly applicable to M&A at an EB, including financial modeling, deal structuring, and client interaction.
Market Perception: While FDD experience is respected, the perception of Corporate Finance roles within a Big 4 is often closer to that of investment banking, which could make a future transition to an EB more seamless.
Timing and Market Conditions: You mentioned the possibility of swinging a better bank during a good job market. It's important to weigh the current market conditions and job market trends. If the market is strong, you might have a chance at a BB/EB directly from FDD, but if it's not, the Corporate Finance role could be a good stepping stone.
Long-Term Goals: If your long-term goal is to be in M&A at an EB, gaining M&A advisory experience now, even at a smaller scale, could be a strategic move. It's about building a narrative for your career that shows a clear progression towards your goal.
In conclusion, while there's always a risk in turning down an offer, based on your goals, the Corporate Finance role could be a beneficial move. It's not necessarily "dumb" to turn it down if you have a strong conviction that you can land a role at a BB/EB directly from FDD, but it's a calculated risk. Consider the points above and how they align with your career aspirations and the current job market.
