Financier Face Off Share

I recently read a list of the great financiers of all time and also another one on the top 5 bankers. Although I obviously knew that banking has been around for ages,

I was expecting more contemporary players from the industry, but was shocked with how few photographs there were in the first link, just paintings. I guess it makes sense, these days it is harder for one person to single-handedly have such an impact.

Who, in your opinion, has been the greatest financier/banker of the past 50 years? With the size of the industry there are so many possible answers, I'm surprised it isn't discussed on here more often.

Finance doesn't seem like music, politics or other fields whereby people are inspired to join by those before them; most people drive themselves to succeed based on their own personal goals (e.g. money, personal growth, developing their skills, and of course, money). Myself included; I've never spent too much time looking at the paths of 'great' financiers, I'm too busy trying to start on my own journey. That being said, most with an interest have people in mind who they consider to be extraordinary because of what they achieved or how they achieved it.

Scotch and cigars in NYC? Share

My boss and I have a lot in common. We both have wives (that spend too much money), kids (that make it all worth it), houses in the burbs (that we can barely afford), and importantly- a love for scotch and cigars, (preferably enjoyed at the same time).

It's a goddamn crime that FiDi doesn't have a place that serves scotch and lets you smoke a good cigar. There's the DTA, but I'm not ready to plunk down the fee just yet. (I'm joining next march)

That said- does anyone know of a place anywhere along the 4/5/6 line between FiDi and GCT that serves macallan and lets you enjoy a nice cigar? This is where I want to go after my next closing. Last time, we hung out in the office and I got WAY too drunk for office drunk. Anyhow that's a story for another time.

Scotch and cigars after work- ideal locale? Discuss

As we are approaching the Facebook IPO this Friday, there are a plethora of articles and segments that have been coming out on every news website and continuous television coverage that covers every development of the IPO in great detail.

Yesterday, the major financial websites ran articles that discussed the majority of the largest shareholders who have increased the amount of shares that they will be offering to the public; an amount that together will raise the size of the IPO approximately 25%.

Best way to Refresh? Share

how to refresh.jpg

Hey amigos, I've been working really hard lately and I'm on the verge of burnout....Can people recommend some ways to refresh and refocus? I'll be taking a few weeks off...

Was thinking of:

  1. Renting a sports car and driving around Europe
  2. Hunting the bronze stuff in Brazil
  3. Cycling around Japan, eating sushi, and drinking green tea

Please monkeys, do you have any memorable refresher sessions?

I know Finchie had some success with Tantric... I don't want to make too big of a time commitment, just a two week break

Marvin Miller Rails About CEO Pay Share

by hdavid57      O

(Baboon, 167

MarvinMiller.jpg

Marvin Miller, the slayer of the reserve clause in baseball, has an eerily soothing voice. He would gaze into the television camera as if he were in a trance, speaking slowly, softly, with a calm demeanor that not only would convince me of what he was saying, but make me wonder how anyone could possibly believe anything else.

The reserve clause? Abolish it. Baseball players are not cattle, as my grandfather used to say. Baseball is not entitled to an exemption from the reserve clause because it is an "amusement," whatever that means. Baseball is a business. A baseball player is entitled to sell his services to the highest bidder when his contract expires, not be forced to have it renewed at the discretion of  the major league baseball team that "owns him."

As Curt Flood said to Howard Cosell when he refused to accept his trade to the Philadelphia Phillies in 1969, "a well paid slave is still a slave." Curt Flood was earning $90,000 a year when he spoke those words. His struggle became a selfless act because, even though the Supreme Court ruled against him, his short term failure paved the way for the long term success of those who followed him. The Catfish Hunters. The Dave McNallys and the Andy Messersmiths. And, more recently, Alex Rodriguez.

When do you need an office? Share

Judging by the way things seem to be trending on WSO, startups are the ideal exit opp for more and more people in finance. With the accessibility of the internet and the countless ways to monetize seemingly simple ideas, it has never been easier to strike out on your own. Obviously starting your own version of Instagram is a hell of a lot easier than actually making money at it but the opportunity is there.

On a related note, I have started to notice more and more advertisements for firms offering either Virtual Offices, online meeting spaces such as GoToMeeting , and made to order offices such as Regus complete with a Secretary (banging you is probably a negotiable add on). This got me thinking about all of the one and two-man start ups that a lot of us aspire to be a part of one day.

So Monkeys, when do you actually need an office?

Ruminations on Rogue Trading Share

rogue trader.jpg

Andy (mod note): 9/23/11 article from Damodaran - but the talk on Rogue trading is still VERY relevant today.
--------
We are in the midst of a "rogue trading" scandal and the media loves it. It started with this report in the Wall Street Journal about an unnamed trader who had lost $ 2 billion for the Swiss banking giant, UBS. The trader was quickly identified and named as Kewku Abodoli, a director at the UBS delta One desk (more on that later). Today's story has more details, with a comment from Abodoli's lawyer about how much he regrets his actions (or at least getting caught). If you have a sense of deja vu, it is because you have seen this story play out before. Just to refresh your memory, here are some memorable rogue traders from times past, with one being famous enough (Nick Leeson) that he had a movie (and not a very good one) made about him.

Powerful Nonverbal Communication Share

(Baboon, 143

non verbal communication

Do you tell people that you are powerful...or do you show them?

The most important communication you make each day doesn't depend on what you say as much as it how you appear when you say it. Even the brightest minds can fail to reach success if they have horrible nonverbal communication. Unless you're counting on finding the rare blind interviewer, it's therefore important you not only practice the words you'll use to respond, but also how you'll physically present yourself. By the time you have entered the room, shook hands, and sat down, the interviewer already has a preconceived perception of you based nearly entirely off of nonverbal communications.

There are several ways we display nonverbal communication, but for the sake of brevity I'm going to focus on posture. The days of old involving children being taught to balance books on their head or slapped on the wrist if not sitting up straight in their desks is over. While these methods may seem infeasible (perhaps they could balance their iPads instead?) or inhumane in today's world, posture is largely overlooked in our society. Why?

Shipping Up? Share

shipping.jpg

With all the talk this week of exciting, hot technologies, social media and the waves of the future, I’m going to add to it by talking about something dry and boring:

Shipping.

This actually happens to be an area of interest for me, because there will always be a need to carry stuff by water (at least until they invent that teleporter they keep talking about).

One of the key numbers used to gauge the health of the shipping industry is the Baltic Dry Index (BDI), which offers a measure of how expensive it is to move dry bulk freight across 23 of the busiest shipping routes in the world. BDI focuses mostly on dry bulk carriers, which carry raw materials and commodities such as iron, coal, and grain.
You can see how this would be useful—it directly measures demand for this type of shipping and by extension indirectly measures demand for commodities. If you believe the global economy is headed for a strong rebound, it would be a good sector in which to go long.

Are Women Better Traders Than Men? Share

by chabo11

femaletrader.jpg

The trading fiasco at JPMorgan Chase has triggered countless articles on regulation, risk, and strategy. Gary Belsky over at Time is taking a different approach.

The recent resignation of female JPM executive Ina Drew prompted Belsky to write this article suggesting more female traders should exist not just for the sake of equality, but because women are in fact better than men at the job.

For their 2001 study, the distinguished behavioral economists Terrence Odean and Brad Barber analyzed account data for more 35,000 households at a large discount brokerage, looking at the common stock investments of men and women from February 1991 through January 1997. Their top-line discoveries: Men on average traded 45% more frequently than women, and that hyperactive trading reduced their net returns by 2.65 percentage points a year, compared to 1.72 percentage points for women. Put another way: Men were on average worse stock traders than women.

Do you think women make better traders than men? As a guy, I’m inclined to defend my gender and say no. Here are 5 reasons why Belsky says yes:

Are many of you actively investing in stocks or real estate etc.? If so, how do you find the time for due diligence etc. while working FT in a bank? Thanks

I'm going to be an organ donor in the next few months (kidney, to my dad). I'm not at all in it for the glory (except for subtly dropping it when i'm picking up a chick at the bar) BUT should I add this experience to my resume? If so, how and where?

If its subtle / small / at bottom of page I imagine it could add some character / uniqueness to my resume if nothing else

Also, should I bring this up in interviews? I assume so - if the proper behavioral question were to come up (or if we're just chatting about my background / who I am etc)

I've been researching MBA programs on the East Coast and have noticed that professionals from Energy are barely represented at schools like Columbia and Stern. Columbia's class profile shows only 2% from energy background and 3% for Stern.

I know almost everything Energy related is in Houston and many Energy people go to UT or Rice but I would think that the industry would be better represented given how large it is now.
