Career analysts vs. PM

I have two questions about the dynamic between career analysts and PMs.

  1. If the comp was in the same ballpark, what would incentivize an analyst who likes doing research and analysis to become a PM?

  2. I see some PMs who are younger and less experienced than the career analysts on the team. What's the relationship like in these cases?

Not every firm is the same. Ignore my title, but, at the AM firm I work at, PMs and Analysts are equivalent and their pay is not based on that title. At my firm, the PM and analyst are two different roles. The PM is obviously focused on portfolio construction and the analyst is focused on idea generation and research. The firm values these two roles equally and the motivation to become a PM is not there for many of the analysts since there is no difference in pay, so they would rather focus on research.
