Thoughts on Pimco?

Specifically their new undergrad trading analyst Ft program that’s being advertised as a direct line to be groomed into a junior PM role within a 3-5 years. I know traditionally it’s been mba and direct hire heavy in the FO so just wanted to get the input of anyone who might be knowledgeable about this recent change

Not sure about direct promo for the trading analyst role but the recent analyst program with direct promo to asso/VP at Pimco is under their alternatives business which is essentially private credit and equity stuff. Huge area of focus for the firm right now -- I think they want alts revenue to be ~25% of their overall business over the next 5 years. The official title for their internship program is "Alternative Credit and Private Strategies Analyst" - pretty niche group but heard comp is $110k for analysts which is street and the hours are not bad at all.

any idea how big the class size is for this role? and is that comp just base, what is the bonus roughly?

Apologies for responding to an older comment. Could you elaborate whether this also applies to the London office?

AM firms are very liberal in handing out the title "Portfolio Manager," even to the execution monkeys. The jump to a true PM role is difficult, and there is no tried and tested path. PIMCO as a firm has never really been keen on fostering internal talent - finds it far easier to poach at the MBA level and laterally.

Alts role will lead to a true "PM" role (does this title even mean much on the private side?). Base is $110K for both Trading and Alts roles (while I think Tech is at $100K and Product/Account is at $90K).

not sure. they haven't advertised it as a straight shot to PM like the alts role. i believe it's possible but I'm not sure if it's the natural pathway via promotion
