Getting into BlackRock PMG

I'm reposting this with slight changes as I've talked to an analyst at the FMA division in London. Basically, he said he wasn't content with his position and is actively trying to move to PMG, but is also failing. He couldn't give me any comments on the PMG division except that it's "almost impossible" for me to break into. I'd genuinely appreciate any insight into this. Is it really almost impossible?

I'm taking the CFA L2 by the end of Aug then heading to my MSc (which same program the analyst I spoke to attended, except he hasn't done any CFA work). If it's really impossible, what are some other decent divisions I should aim for??
Thanks.

Hey eerie_eps, I think you deserve a response...heck, everyone does. We're listening, sorry about the delay ...my best guess at places on WSO that could help:

I'm not sure about London, but I know people who have moved from FMA into core PM in NYC. FMA is a sweatshop relative to a lot of teams at BLK and their pay does not reflect it. PMG at BLK can mean a couple things. Getting into the core PM role is not hard and can definitely be done, their alpha teams are much smaller, so much harder to get into. PAG is a great first team to join as you would learn a lot about the area you cover and would be working with a lot of the PMs at BLK.

thanks for the insight, appreciate it!

i have contacted a clerk from the recruitment team at my university and someone told me that FMA is indeed the brunt of BLK.

i'm still confused though what you mean by alpha teams. do you mean teams like iShares, quant..etc??
