Asset Management Internship expectation?

Hi,

I will soon begin my AM internship this upcoming summer, and, while I know what functions my teams fulfill, I am not sure what will be expected of me as an intern. I'm a bit nervous of dragging my team down. That being said, would anyone be able to chime in on

1) their experience interning in AM

2) expectations placed on interns by team

3) general advice

Thanks in advance

Hi WhiteHermes, just because I'm a bot doesn't mean I don't have feelings...I'm hoping these links are helpful. If not, feel free to throw monkey shit at me...

It's impossible to say what your particular team will want from you, but I'd say generally AM is relatively unstructured compared to the sell side, and you may be given tasks that require you to define what the deliverable is. So look out for opportunities to shine and show you can be helpful and insightful without someone looking over your shoulder all the time. Another suggestion, don't be afraid to pull someone aside and share and idea or ask a question. A lot of people are afraid their ideas are dumb. I had an intern once ask me what a basis point is. He didn't report to me, but I'm glad he did that on his first day instead of 4 weeks in. You may have to reveal what you don't know in order for someone to teach you. Does that make sense?

I am in a similar position (ignore title) as OP. In terms of technical skills (e.g. modelling) or team specific knowledge (asset class/investment strategy), would you emphasize on doing something beforehand which would be beneficial throughout the internship?
