Master programs for Physical trading ?
Hey All!
As I'm nearing the end of my Computer Science degree, I'm eager to explore opportunities in the dynamic field of physical commodities trading. I'm contemplating pursuing a master's degree, and I'm curious about the value of studying supplychain and logistics in relation to breaking into the physical trading.
While I'm considering this path, I'm also open to suggestions and insights from those who have experience in the industry. Are there alternative routes or specialized programs that could provide a solid foundation for physical trading?
I'd greatly appreciate any advice or recommendations that you may all have!
Based on the WSO content, pursuing a master's degree in fields related to supply chain and logistics can indeed be beneficial for a career in physical commodities trading. Here are some insights and alternative routes you might consider:
Master of Arts in International Trading, Commodity Finance & Shipping: This program at Université de Genève is highly regarded. It uniquely combines academic learning with practical experience, and is located in Geneva, which has a high concentration of physical traders. This could provide a robust foundation for your career in physical trading.
Relevant Graduate Programs: Many companies in the physical commodities trading sector offer graduate programs which could serve as an alternative to a traditional master's degree. For example, the Glencore Commercial Graduate Program and Trafigura Global Graduate Program are designed to train and develop graduates in the trading sector.
Networking and Internships: Regardless of the educational path you choose, networking with professionals in the industry and securing internships are crucial. These practical experiences provide insights into the industry and can often lead to job opportunities.
Additional Skills: Given your background in Computer Science, enhancing your profile with data analytics skills could be advantageous. The trading industry increasingly relies on data-driven decision making, and your tech skills can make you a valuable asset.
Exploring these options can provide a solid foundation and potentially accelerate your entry into physical commodities trading.

Bump 😊
Texas A&M TRIP program is probably the program most tailored towards physical trading. Outside of that school, kind of a crapshoot. I’d say maybe Tulane, Virginia Tech both provide more specific phys trading curriculum, but most physical energy traders I’ve interacted with in the industry come from a very wide range of programs. Most older traders seem to have fallen into it one way or another
tulane has a masters program for just energy. I know that a couple merchants recruit directly out of it.
Unfortunately, I’m not apart of that world, I’m in Europe, which is annoying… those programs sound interesting tho.
University of Geneva literally has a masters of science in commodity trading. Not familiar with it but a quick LinkedIn search suggests it places relatively well. This took a few minutes to google..
Thanks for sharing ! I have looked at that, but I was looking for something within the UK :/
I read that Rice has a new masters program focused around Energy Transition? Might be worth looking into, but not too sure
