I am a mechanical engineer at 28m with no real experience in the field. Is pursuing further qualifications (master's, MBA) useful in my situation because I see that I lack a lot of knowledge and experience. To conclude how doomed am i ?

Not at all. Speaking for my coverage group (energy), there are lots of engineers that did an MBA, pivoted, and broke in as associates. If you can tailor your engineering experience to a specific niche and get into a top MBA program you will be fine.
Resilience will get you anywhere you need to go, it's just a function of time
