Balancing faith and IB

I’m an undergrad who is pretty into the Catholic faith - try and hit daily mass a few extra days outside of Sunday. Really need that and a 45 min workout (at least 4-5 days/week) to keep myself grounded and sane.

How realistic is ripping a 30min long 5pm or noon mass when working in IB? Obviously the 45min workout 4-5 days a week is very realistic, but just wanted to see how much free time you all actually have outside of work on average. Thanks

Note: I am going to a pretty intense bank - not sure how face time heavy yet

I'm not sure of your location, but in NYC (Midtown), I know of a few bankers who will often visit St. Patrick's Cathedral to light a candle (a few blocks away, and you can grab lunch while out).

I know of some who have asked to come in later due to attending early weekday Mass for something special.

If it's during the day, I think you might have difficulty. Also, if just starting out, your schedule is going to be insane, to the point that you might barely (ever) leave the office.

I think Isaiah might be able to answer this better, but I don't know of anyone who was able to juggle daily Mass attendance with an early career schedule.

Yeah you and me both brother. I’m not going to NYC, but according to WSO reviews of my shop, I’m going to one of the sweatiest groups out there. Been going 2-3 times a week for the whole year so cutting that down to just the Saturday vigil (I think I have protected Saturdays) is going to be quite the challenge.

Tbh I’m super concerned about having time to go to confession too. We’ll see though. If I have to wake up early on Sundays for like a 6:00am Mass, so be it.

There are also A LOT of Catholic churches in Manhattan, so I’m sure you’ll be able to find something that might work.

God bless.

I'm admittedly non-religious, so I cannot empathize well, but my take would be the following:

IB is a demanding job in several ways. Everyone always talks about the stress, number of hours, etc., but I want to caution you about the need to be flexible, which is part of the problem as it relates to hours. Plenty of juniors (as was the case in my day) have to sit around and wait for comments from those above them, but what I always found more frustrating is the lack of certainty. For example, you come in on Monday morning with one call and one meeting on your calendar. Often, by mid-Monday, that looks dramatically different. I'm not sure of the group you are joining, but client calls, internal calls/meetings and other time-pressing needs pop up frequently.

So, the way you can hopefully gain balance is by finding a way to duck out at either noon or 5pm, for instance, and make the decision each day based on how your schedule and demands unfold. I don't see it being a problem, so long as you have some flexibility with regards to time and days because in this industry, client and senior bankers rarely provide that to you.

Some areas of the US are more religious than others, I think if your in something like HOU it might be more normalized than in NYC/SF. People still manage to attend mass in NYC/SF, but the numbers may be smaller than in more conservative states like Texas, and conservative states typically have strong religious protections.

I was reading a couple weeks ago that there's a perpetual Adoration chapel

I love perputal adoration chapels. We have one where I live - 24/7 365 you can stop by and it is the most plush comfortable room with lots of inspirational books and the Jesus statue in the front is of Jesus the High Priest. So epic.

What I would do is the 7am mass in the morning and workout at night. You want to keep appearances if you have to go into the office and don't want to be known as the guy dipping out every day. It depends what level you're at too - if you're more senior you can probably have more flexibility if you put out at your company and people know you put out.

Also, if you like ripping masses so much, have you ever thought about becoming a priest?

Hey man, know you're pretty devout but how often do you go to church and when? Just curious

When I was thinking of and applying to full time ministry, I went to mass everyday and said the Liturgy of the Hours, which is a regimented set of prayers throughout the day.

Currently, I only go to mass 1x per week on Sundays at 7:30am with my Dad. But I also help out my church's garden 5x per week for 15hrs and sometimes go to the blessed sacrament to pray so am basically at my church 6x per week. This week 7x per week as my Dad wanted to go to confession on Saturday and he can't drive.

Mark 7:6-15

It is okay if you do not have time for mass. No need to force yourself to go if it doesn’t make sense to go. What matters is your faith, what is inside of you, not just your actions.

Cheers from a fellow Catholic.
