How to use a finance career as an excuse to see the world?
So I am headed into a top US MSF program and have a background in boutique IB, corp fin in Europe, and am headed into an investment management/research position.
I'm fortunate to be from a family that is well off financially, and as a result my salary is more a means for me to establish independence and use it as a way to experience life, so I'm not super pressed on it. A few years down the road I have the option to pivot to the family business, etc... Part of my rationale for a finance career is understanding the business operations, and to 'talk the talk', and generally become a more sociable and professional individual.
I had the chance to live in Europe for a few months for a corporate finance internship and absolutely loved seeing different ways of living, eating, art, culture, history, etc... and want to keep exploring. IB and other careers like it are so time consuming that I don't believe that I would really be able to enjoy much of my life beyond work. I'd love to travel with my family but they are so busy that we hardly find any open windows, especially for going abroad.
I was hoping to hear any suggestions for career paths with my background or experience that I can use as a means to see the world. I'd love to live in/visit Singapore (my siblings went there for 3 months for an internship and loved it), Hong Kong, much of Europe, and even more obscure places.
Probably ideal for you would be to find a large company with an international presence (and then transfer around in the world), or an opportunity that allows you to WFH wherever you want.
Corporate Banking- alot of travel involved at banks/institutions where Corporate Bankers are the Relationship managers for front office. They travel to meet clients all over the world, understand their financing needs and then enlist the relevant banking product groups to deliver/structure a solution.
Sounds like a interesting/viable path: any idea if my IB/Corp Fin experience will be adequate in getting into a role like this? Would love to get face time with others in a professional setting internationally like this
Curious - if you want to see the world why choose a MSF in the US? Why not some other city that you want to explore if money is not a concern? Singapore, London, Europe have great Master options and easier to be recruited locally.
I am from the US and it was my pipeline for my obvious option, which is to remain in the US (family/friends are all here). Maybe an MBA internationally in 4-5 years will be a different path.
