Transitioning from Market Risk Analyst to Front Roles in Energy Trading

Hi everyone,

As someone who has three years of experience as a market risk analyst for a large Prop Trading firm covering Power, Oil, Gas, and LNG desks. How could a smooth transition into front roles within the energy industry - i.e. to Power Trading - look like? The desks I cover hire only very senior traders (average age 45+) with an extensive PnL track record from previous trading positions.

I would greatly appreciate any advice or suggestions you may have regarding the following:

Transitioning to Front Roles: What are the most viable options for someone with a background in market risk analysis? Are there particular front roles within Asset Backed Trading / Prop Trading, such as power-, gas- or LNG-trader, desk analyst, portfolio manager or any other positions that align well with market risk analysis experience?

In-Demand Skills: In addition to expertise in market risk analysis, what other skills should one focus on developing to increase their chances of success in a front role? Are there any specific technical skills, industry knowledge, or soft skills that you believe would be highly valuable in these roles? Are there any additional degrees or certifications that may unlock some doors?

Networking and Opportunities: How can someone effectively network within the energy industry and connect with professionals in front roles? Are there any specific platforms, events, or communities you recommend for expanding the network and discover potential job opportunities in Europe, and maybe more specifically in Switzerland?

I understand that your time is valuable, so we'll keep it brief. Any insights and perspectives you can provide would be immensely helpful to navigate this career transition. Thank you in advance for your guidance, and we look forward to hearing from you!

Thank you
