Physics & Math major needing advice
Hey everyone,
I'm sure there are many people asking this question in one form or another so I'll try keep it simple:
I'm a Physics and Maths/Stats major at a target university in Australia, GPA of 6.67/7, HD average and will be doing Honours in applied maths. I am interested in finance, have a pretty conservative personal investment portfolio, participated in a few stock trading games and I'm attempting to join a finance club at uni this semester. In terms of previous experience, I did an internship in a Big 4 Tax (Big 4s in general are relatively common ways to bridge into IB in Aus) and a science related internship.
My question is, do I have a chance for an S&T summer internship? I know that some places like people with the quantitative skills, it's just hard to quantify and sell your/my interest in finance to an interview or someone at a networking event.
This isn't some sort of "fad" for me either, I've been thinking about IB for more than a year at this point.
Hopefully this is a somewhat coherent post and thanks for the help in advance.
Fellow quantitatively focused major here You have a great shot imho Learn about markets and then talk about them and if you are in an interview/networking ask questions that show some degree of knowledge so that those listening to you will know you at least were interested enough to do some research
Also, ib and s&t are two very different fields Be aware very few paths in s&t from my understanding involve a great deal of math although I do believe studying those subjects make you smarter So if you are not happy with the mental exercise of understanding markets you likely won't be happy in the field due to intellectual boredom. Good call on getting into your university's investment club from a resume stand point it is super easy to demonstrate interest in the field.
