wondering
Im a 3rd year tax associate at a large law firm in the southeast. I was wondering about applying to some of the top business schools. I love my work but would rather be doing more of the business type work.
3.98 under grad accounting, Also a CPA
Top 3% at top 30 law school
Federal clerk
I was wondering how schools would look upon my background and work experience, since one reason I got into tax law was I love businesss.
let me guess, K and S and went to law school at vandy/uga?
You may find some resistance to the tax side of your resume, but if you can find a way to work in any really good experience you've had in M&A transactions it may be valuable. If not, I'd try to find a job at a company, not an ibank, that's about to embark on divestitures or aquisitions, and get some experience that way, then look into transitioning over to the IB world.
Taxatorney95... if your credentials are as you pose, you have an excellent shot at a top B-School. I absolutely kid you not. Top 3% in law school and a federal clerkship are extremely challenging to come by. Trust me, B-Schools know this and will find it very compelling and your application will be at the forefront of others. So kudos and respect to you!
Ultimately, what the top B-Schools look for is diversity in an entering class, i.e. a class composition with a broad set of academic backgrounds, professional experiences, expertise, leadership, perspectives etc. The top programs want you to get as much out of their academic program, but also equally as much learning from your fellow classmates. The fellowships you gain in B-School will benefit you your entire career and your tax background will certainly differentiate you.
The kid above who said that schools would "find some resistance to the tax side of your resume" is utterly clueless. Na
