UNC Econ vs Business

I’m currently a freshman at UNC deciding whether to do a double major in BS economics and Business or just a BS Econ. I’m an international so doing a stem degree is necessary for three years OPT. I want to hopefully go to NYC for IB and then transition into PE/VC. I know UNC is a semi-target at the very least so wanted to know which major I should chose. I have got into a business school club and will apply to more as I become a sophomore.

Should I stick to a double major or major in just BS economics if I want to land a NYC gig.

Would recommend the double major if you believe you can handle the course load. Otherwise, if you do only Econ, would say to get involved even more on campus and your own education (start a club, work your way into clubs with the idea of being on the board/making decision in your future years, study accounting/finance on your own with the classic books)

Well, based on the most helpful WSO content, it seems that both paths have their own merits. A double major in BS Economics and Business could provide a broader foundation of knowledge, potentially making you more versatile in the job market. However, maintaining a high GPA might be easier with a single major in BS Economics, which could also be beneficial when it comes to recruiting.

Ultimately, the decision should be based on your personal interests and strengths. If you enjoy both Economics and Business and feel confident in your ability to maintain a strong GPA, a double major could be a great option. On the other hand, if you prefer to focus your efforts and delve deeper into one field, a single major in BS Economics could be the way to go.

Remember, it's not just about the major - extracurricular activities, internships, and networking also play a crucial role in landing a job in IB or transitioning into PE/VC. So, keep up the good work with your business school club and continue to seek out additional opportunities as they arise.

And remember, even a monkey like me knows that the journey to Wall Street is a marathon, not a sprint. So, take your time, explore your options, and choose the path that feels right for you. Good luck!

The UNC business major is 42 credits, minus the 4 credits for ECON 410 that you would be taking anyway as an Econ major.  This should be easily doable as a second major.  Be aware that your degree will say BS BA and not BS Econ.
