Need opinions on Cal Haas vs UCLA (Transfer)
Hi guys, I am currently a sophomore and have been accepted to UC Berkeley Haas and UCLA econ as a transfer. For some insight on my work experience, I finished a REPE internship this past summer and am currently working for a small boutique bank.
Obviously Haas is known as a better school but the issue causing my dilemma is that Haas requires their kids to finish in two years, not allowing a student to delay graduation at all. As a transfer, I know that it will be very hard to land SA 2021 in BB or EB if I go to Haas as recruiting will be wrapped up by then. With UCLA, I know that it is possible for me to delay my graduation so that I'm a sophomore coming into my first year.
The question that I have would be if you guys would choose to go to a school that is more renowned but limits myself to MM SA positions/makes recruiting for bigger names harder or a school that isn't as prestigious for finance but allows me to roll back a year to be on the recruiting timeline.
Thank You!
There's no guarantee that staying an extra year at UCLA will land you a BB or EB position. Likewise, there's no guarantee that going to Haas = MM. I'd say take Haas. Much better reputation/network in finance. You can always try to lateral for FT.
Would you not say that FT recruiting would be even harder though in spite of COVID-19? I know that the extra year at UCLA won’t guarantee me a SA position at BB/EB but I definitely like the opportunity to try and compete for one of these spots.
Thanks
You won't be recruiting for FT until the end of next summer. No one knows how the job market will look in 15 months. I'd say take the Haas offer, find a decent banking job for next summer, and lateral.
Haas
Haas no contest. Haas does better than people think and UCLA does worse. Coming from USC student
