Msc Finance, competitiveness and chances
Hey guys, I'd just like some insight on my chances in some masters program I'm applying to (or consideting).
A bit about my profile:
-3.1 GPA in computer engineering at McGill. (3.3 in my last 2 years, i kinda had a really bad start). Im currently in my last semester.
-GMAT 690 (q:48 v37)
-Some work experience working for in Asset Management, and IB. Both in small boutiques.
The programs Im considering (among others):
-Msc quant finance and risk management at bocconi in milan.
-Msc finance at imperial college.
I'd appreciate any advice / opinion on my chances for these programs.
Thanks :)
Why don't you look at some American programs? Your GMAT is good enough.
Thanks for the reply :) I've looked around for american programs (on these forums mostly). I was considering also applying to vanderbilt or villanova. Are there masters good in terms of job placement, and would I have a chance of admission given my low gpa? Also, are there any programs at other universities im overlooking?
You likely would be an admit at Vandy because of your high GMAT.
Vandy does well down South at investment banks. Villanova places well in Philly and NY at BB and MM investment banks. Both masters programs are solid. It depends on where you want to live afterwards.
If I were you, I'd apply to Vandy. Villanova may be out of reach since they ask for a minimum 3.2 GPA for undergraduate. But it's worth a shot. You never know. Apply anyway. Just to be sure.
Honestly, if you're gonna get an admit at Vandy, you sure as hell are gonna get an admit at Nova. Consensus is Vandy > Nova
The Bocconi program is not bad, and Bocconi places well in London. But if I were you I'd go to Imperial. If you are able to maintain a good average, you'll have no problem getting into a BB. Imperial is a Target, and its reputation in the City is excellent. Plus you're next to the offices of the major IBanks. (disclaimer: i don't attend either one)
Thanks for the replies guys. I was also mostly interested in what you guys think my chances of admission to these programs are, given my qualifications (gpa/gmat/experience).
I will check out some more american programs.
Don't think you would get into Imperial with those stats
Co-sign. They place emphasis on GPA and yours is lower than the average profile.
Ok, thats what I was doubting. Anyone know about Bocconi's admission process and reqs?
You should look at MSFHQ.com. A link to Bocconi's site is there.
I wouldn't say that the consensus says vandy>nova.
most people overestimate how hard it is to get into lse. your gmat is well above average scores for every finance masters program there. top target in uk, i would aim for one of those programs (msc finance, msc finance and economics, etc)
Thanks arden. I feel my gmat could make up a bit for my relatively low gpa. I'm still gonna apply to imperial and bocconi (may even consider lse msc finance, although it might be a long shot) :P. I'll be sure to update this thread for future reference once I get my results.
Regards
I was really considering acc& finance. I read its webpage on the lse website. Im afraid it's more geared towards people who have majored in finance or related (from what I understood reading the program description). Do you know if they consider engineering students such as myself? I would be very interested in this program.
Thanks.
LSE is not THAT good...Its the typical good UK university that a decent student goes straight out of college. Bocconi is nice but I think it is a 2 year program (at least their MSF is),which is waste of time.I think it is perfect for placing in Milan,if you speak Italian. Otherwise,if your target is London, choose a UK B-school.I would go for Imperial. Take into account that good MSFs are 20000+25000 pounds, which is above 30000 dollars. My opinion: Stay in the USA. In the UK,choose Imperial or Warrick (hurry for deadlines),then LSE,then City (has a late deadline)
Your 690 GMAT is fine for Bocconi.. They require something like 650 GMAT plus a sort kind of test to take there..
Just thought I'd update, I got into Bocconi, still waiting on Imperial, LSE and Warwick.
And to clarify Peterposter, its the gmat OR the test thing at bocconi, not both.
