Master in Finance at IE Business School?
Hi Fellows,
I graduated from University of Melbourne in finance and accounting and just got admitted for the Master in Finance program at Spain's IE Business School.
I know Financial Times ranked IE and IE's MIF program highly, but many others said FT's ranking is BS.
My goal is to break into the BB banks after graduation. No matter in Europe, Asia (I am Chinese) or back in Australia.
Do you think IE is truly a top school that is worth going anyway or do you think there is no need to spend 34,200 euro on this Master's program. How would people in the industry rank IE ? Do you think its reputation is comparable to tier-1 B-schools in the US and UK?
Thanks for your advices.
Knowing a few people that went to IE for the MIF program I can tell you that they would all take the same decision again. Placement is very well and they had no problem breaking into finance (PE or IBD). The education is apparently very practical so that you come out well prepared for the job.
Interested in this as well.
Bump, need to hear more advices please.

Hi eternal_oceanus,
Coincidence! I applied for the Master in Finance at the IE too. Got a conditional acceptance subject to the attainment of a high gmat score. To be honest I'm having a lot of trouble with the exam and I don't know whether I'll score well. It's hard trying to juggle a full-time job, a part-time lecturing job and studying for the GMAT. But we'll see.
Actually I've heard great things about the IE from acquaintances and friends. The only bad comments I've seen (read) are online. Let's just say I trust my friends more!
Admittedly, the course is extremely expensive. But if money is no object for you and your intention is to work in continental Europe and learn a new language (Spanish), then I would go for the IE hands down. On the other hand, if your aim is to work in the UK, then I would go for the LSE or UCL. British employers tend to be very proud of their local degrees.
Hope this helps, and maybe we'll cross paths this September!
Good luck.
Hi,
Have you accepted the program? I've got an offer for the program, and have similar worries abt the reputation and career prospects.
I've got the IE Fellowship (50%), so my costs would be significantly lower. Still confused though.
Your advice would be appreciated.
Hi,
Could you please share your profiles. I am thinking about applying to IE MFin with:
Decent engineering undergrad (but low, 6/10 GPA), 760 GMAT, International exp. (robotics), Decent EC/ leadership experience, 3 international papers, good programing/ Matlab experience.
I am really worried about my sh**y GPA and no work-ex (or internships) in finance.
Thanks!
P.S. - Would it be smart from an admissions perspective if I applied to the MiIM instead of the MFin?
One thing I can say abt IE is that, they really do look at the overall profile of the candidates as opposed just GMAT/GPA. As long as you can show that you bring significant value (760 GMAT would really help in this matter) to the class, you'll get admission. At the very least you'll be called for an interview, where you can present your case (Strong ECAs, International experience etc) and convince the admissions team.
Regarding MiF or MiM, it completely depends on your career choice. What is your preference? Do you want to move to I-Banking/PE or do you want to keep your options open for Management Consulting as well? If you're 100% sure that you want a finance role, then definitely go for MiF. On paper & rankings, IE MiF is undoubtedly one of the best in the world.
All the best :)
@shuvro.shuvro I am 90% sure I want to get into finance (IB/PE to be specific) and 10% confused about consulting. So, MiF is what I am leaning towards. But, considering that I have no work-ex in IB/ PE, it'll hard to convince adcom that my goals lie there. My current job (predictive analytics for BFSI) is slightly related to credit rating/ risk so, more realistic goals for me would be in equity/securities research. What do you think?
Hi guys, thanks for all the comments and sorry for the late response. No, I didn't go to IE eventually.
I had concerns that it would be extremely difficult for me to land an offer in the UK with an non-EU passport after studying. So I joined Accenture in Australia instead and am planning to do an MBA in the US or UK after a few years' work.
All the best to you guys !
I was a master in finance at IE in 2012. I can tell you that the school is definitely top notch, despite the concerns about career services. People these days expect to end up working at a BB simply because they went to a top business school irrespective of their accomplishments in business school.
At the end of the day, 95%+ of our class either ended up doing banking, PE or consulting within 3-6 months after graduating. I have friends working at McKinsey, UBS, MS, DB and hedge funds, across both Europe and in the US.
Our classes were not simply taught by professors, but by individuals that were successful in their respective industries - MDs from banks, PE fund managers, HF managers etc. These "professors" were able to tie the intense coursework we had with real life experience that in my opinion is hard to find at other top business schools. I highly recommend IE business school. The quality of the students and career placement has only improved since I attended. As a side note, I was accepted into St. Gallen in Switzerland and LSE and work at a HF.
I forgot to add Jefferies, JP Morgan and Rothschild, all of which have a pretty strong recruiting presence at IE.
Your reply is encouraging,I wonder how is the job placement of asian students,do they get offers as good as those from Europe?
Hi all, I know this is a few months later than the previous responses. I been admitted to the undergraduate business program at IE and also Bocconi. I was wondering if you guys have any experience concerning undergraduate studies and if IE has been able to build up a reputation for its young age(undergrad only 6-7 years).
I have a friend doing the MSc in Finance at I.E Business School and although he told me the education is very good, there are plenty of other programs worth way less that are just as good. Coming from a good undergrad, he told me that he basically hasn't learned much so far... Mind you, he's very busy and has tons of reports to hand in and presentations/case studies to prepare but other than that, being in Madrid is a big disadvantage compared to London. People telling you it's the same is not telling the truth. He told me that basically every single person in his class has already taken 3-4 plane trips to NY/London to meet with alumnis, recruiters...
He told me that if he could go back in time, he'd not go to I.E. but would chose a UK program. Although it's very well recruited, he said that being in London and close to all the alumnis/networking events/... has no match.
But I.E is still a top notch school.
cass is better? Especially for those interested all'sset managment
This site won't let me post this anywhere else so can someone help me? I am currently a high school junior and am very interested in getting into finance. Specifically and hopefully Investment Banking, Private Equity, Hedge Fund or something on Wall Street. I know it sounds materialistic but I have taken numerous business, account, finance, and math courses and I love it. Unfortunately my chances of getting into a target-school aren't looking so hot as my freshmen and sophomore year of high school I did not take too seriously. After last year (my sophomore year) my GPA was 3.00. Not good at all I know, however after this year it should be up quite a bit considering I am Acing pre-calc (alg. III & trig) and also Acing my honors history course, with all other subjects in check as well. Furthermore since I am excelling this year I am taking AP Government, Honors Calculus, AP Stat, honors English, and academic Physics next year. I had the chance the take AP Literature but I feel as if it would be too much of a work load, opinions? So back to the point, I just took my SATs so I will know my general score shortly. But based off of what you know now, what schools should I begin to look at for a finance type major to try to get into what I'm interested in. I am from Pennsylvania. Also I play sports year round (soccer, basketball, tennis) & plan on joining the debate team next year. Thanks!
You really need to stop hijacking threads all over WSO by copy and pasting the exact same paragraph like you do here, or here: http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/help-with-job-offer#new And here: http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/young-buck#new And here: http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/hi-some-advice#new

If you're a high school junior, go post on college confidential or something. Get into college before worrying about jobs.
Did you read the whole purpose of my post? It was suggestions about what colleges to look at that's all I ask thank big guy. And I'm terribly sorry WSO new forums aren't working right now it's kind of urgent I need info. Thanks.
There is only one true target school in Pennsylvania. That is UPenn. I don't think you can get in there. You should be posting this on college confidential and not WSO. This is not a "Help me decide on colleges" forum. If you used the search button you will find a list of targets and semi-targets. Do you research yourself and then apply.
The FT ranking for European MSF's is pretty accurate. Its ranking of American MBA's and MSF's, on the other hand, is a complete joke.
Arguing that IE is weak because it isn't in London can basically apply to all the great continental MSF programs. While being in London helps, people all over the world have to travel from where they study to cities where the jobs are. Kind of like going to college at UVA and wanting to work in NYC.
IE is a great school and can place well in Europe. You might need to travel to close by major cities, but you'll have to do that all over the place.
thanks Tna for your feed. instead someone knows the Hult for the placement in Asset Managment or Investment banking? thanks
We need a comprehensive ranking for American MSF programs, something similar to the FT MSF rankings.
So as said before it would be much better to go to UCL, Warwick than IE? How do you compare it to ESADE or Bocconi?
Hey folks,
I am from mechanical engineering and wish to join MFin programme at IE business school.
My CPI is 7.81/10 and have no work expire nice in this finance field.
What GMAT/GRE score I'll need to get admitted to this program?
Your advice will be really appreciated.
your way of asking question is terrifying.
your got that GPA, no work experience in the field. What else do you expect??? I hope that training in ME didn't train you to look like a robot - but buddy turn it around - Think about why they should admit you, and you can answer that question yourself. Thanks.
hey guys. When did u apply for the msc finance at IE? Im interested in the programm starting in september 2016. There is a 3 stage admission without a deadline(rolling admission), but it just started (september 2015). I was wondering when the ones who did the msc applied to the programm. My goal is to submit the first stage of the admission end of september
Hi, I am trying hard to get into IE Business school for MFin programme. My only concern is that since it's one of the top Business School in the world I don't know if my profile is strong enough to be accepted. Until I know what exactly do I need to make my profile strong, I'll be stuck in the dilemma weather my profile is strong or not. So if someone could help me as the what comprises of a strong profile to apply to IE Business School, that would really be helpful.
IE is a highly regarded name in international circles but is a pretty young school which was founded in 1973. In 40 years, it has grown exponentially and now boasts about being in the top 10 MBA, MiM and Masters in Finance degrees worldwide.
Founded by entrepreneurs, the school is always pushing limit and is one of the front runners in creating novel methods of teaching, as well as new programs to suit the new generation.
Key highlights of the program: * Program Duration - 10 months * Average salary - 41,300 euros * Companies recruiting at IE - 3,500+ * Placement rate after 3 months of graduation - 93%
Majority of the graduates are employed in Europe and Asia and salaries are well above 40,000 euros. So, it is definitely worth the investment.
Graduates typically go on to work in investment banks, private equity firms, and as asset managers. The program offers up to 60 electives, allowing students to adapt the program according to market demand.
