LSE or Bocconi (MSc Finance)
Hi,
I'm an italian student currently enrolled at bocconi for the undergraduate program and I'd like to continue with a msc, starting fall 2009.
My choices are between lse (msc 1-year program) or bocconi (2-year program with full scholarship in that case) for their programs in finance. What would you advise me to do (in terms of an inv. banking perspective) :-) ?
Any input is appreciated, thank you!
Hi Nick,
Congrats on your choices. Here a quick slightly sarcastic thought involving basic valuation philosophy:
Asset 1 is something and you have to pay GBP 18k (or so) for it Asset 2 is something that looks like the same, and you have to pay nada for it (ok you somehow "lose" a year in the labour market when selecting Asset 2, but let's ignore opportunity costs for now)
For whatever reason, the market (which may or may not be efficient) seems to value Asset 1 higher, potentially because it may give you higher cash flows in the future.
To actually respond to your question, I'd go LSE (is it MSc A&F by the way)? I've done my MSc there recently and had lots of friends from Bocconi undergrad who went there to then join a bank or consulting firm in London. If that "exit goal" out of the MSc is yours, then the choice should be clear. (I don't have any experience with the quality and hiring stats for Bocconi, can somebody comment?)
What you have to consider with your choice between Assets 1 and 2 is the current risk involved. You'd pay a lot for A1 and currently would not have a 'guarantee' for a nice City job. If you do get a City job though, the investment has paid off. If you're very risk averse (i.e. you'd get largely indebted to do the degree at LSE), you may pick Bocconi, but I'd check how well they are in placing into Banking. Assume it's very good in Italy, not sure about London.
Good luck with your choice anyhow, both options are great.

If you are looking to work internationally, LSE is better.

Brown_Bateman got a good point there. Makes Bocconi even the 'safer' option. But then again, LSE is a brand that will help you a long time. Plus studying there is actually fun - you meet great people interested in finance, and also other stuff.
Thank you for the interesting replies!
The 'timing' factor is indeed important , as I have not work experience at all. However, I'm leaning towards LSE, thinking that 'asset 2' :) will help me with placement on a EU/global scale, not just italy. M2, the program is the newly introduced (starting 2008) msc finance, and I've preferred over the msc fin&economics and acct&finance.
