LSE Econ vs LSE Finance
I’m in the process of applying to UK unis. My current A level grade is 4 A stars. Which major at LSE would be the best for a role in finance? (BBs,EBs anything)
Also, is it common for LSE students to land buy-side jobs out of college like the students at T10 US universities?
Econ is more respected in the UK
Does this apply to master’s programmes too?
Econ (Undergrad) + Finance (Masters) is optimal
Econ is more versatile as well, and LSE isn't the "London School of Finance"
1) econ or finance really doesn’t matter. I do something really random and have EB offers, just pick the one you would enjoy the most.
2) very rarely; when they do, it has nothing to do with the school itself and more to do with the individuals. Often they already have the connections needed to land buyside interviews out of school (normally intl students)
is that the case for other UK and European targets? and if so, why do buy-side firms recruit right out of ug in the US?
I mean, it does happen in the EU but it’s not a structured process for most firms. Some do have a process; take P72: they take 4 spring interns in year 1 of university, 2 convert into summer analysts and then 0-2 will get the full time offer. Similar case for a hedge fund like Brevan Howard that does summer internships (although l/s equity looks for v different profiles to macro) Compare these numbers to the ~70-100 incoming at any given BB a year. The numbers for buyside recruiting just don’t add up enough for you to make decisions based on how likely you will get into a buyside shop.
Unstructured recruiting is even harder: Viking capital and bridgewater assocs occasionally take 1 undergrad from the uk every few years (Ik someone who got Viking out of ug and studied international relations in the uk but turned it down)at this point it comes down to having connections, you need to get face time with a pm which is no easy feat.
Finance is just bigger in the US and their are way more hedge funds there + they can afford to reasonably do OCR at top firms due to how much they allocate to US offices (and if we’re being honest their schools are substantially harder to get into but I don’t think that’s here nor there)
prop firms like citadel securities and Jane street mainly hire undergrads, even in the uk, but I don’t think that is what most think of when it cools to buyside since they do market making
can’t speak for PE
ppe
LSE econ is more respected than LSE PPE. Not that it matters, but LSE econ is their flagship course. PPE is moreso oxfords flagship.
For landing IB, choose whatever course it doesn't matter.
Pick what you think you'd be most interested in here imo.
Economics. Its the flagship of LSE.
