Is Stockholm School of Economics a target for UK IB/MBB/Econ Consulting?

Hi all,

My background is a Business Studies degree with Economics + Finance Major from a T500 worldwide university. I've landed a good graduate job, working in Government Economics in my home country, but am planning on returning to University.

I am considering SSE's Master in Economics, because of the free tuition and opportunity to complete a summer internship. Does anyone know how this degree places in the UK, or if not, where the graduates end up? SSE's publications on this were rather vague.

Perhaps there are any other programmes I should also consider - please do let me know if so.

Thank you for your time.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, Stockholm School of Economics (SSE) is indeed recognized as a target school, particularly for those aiming at careers in investment banking, management consulting, and economic consulting within the UK and Europe. SSE has a strong reputation, especially in the Nordics, and is known for its rigorous academic environment and strong ties to the industry.

For UK-based firms, especially in investment banking and consulting, target schools traditionally include Oxbridge, LSE, Imperial, and UCL among others. However, SSE's reputation for excellence in economics and finance extends beyond the Nordics, and its graduates are well-regarded by employers in the UK as well. The school's strong alumni network and its focus on real-world skills and internships can significantly enhance your employability in the UK market.

Regarding the Master in Economics program at SSE, it's designed to equip students with the analytical tools needed for high-level careers in economics, consulting, and finance. The opportunity for a summer internship as part of the program is particularly valuable, as it can provide practical experience and networking opportunities that are crucial for breaking into competitive fields like investment banking and management consulting.

While SSE's own publications on graduate placements might be vague, it's worth reaching out to the alumni network or the careers service at SSE for more detailed information on where graduates end up, especially in the UK. Networking with alumni and attending industry events can also provide insights into how well SSE is regarded among UK employers.

In addition to considering SSE, it might be beneficial to look into other programs within the UK or Europe that have a strong track record of placing graduates into investment banking, management consulting, or economic consulting roles. Programs at schools like LSE, Oxford, Cambridge, and Imperial in the UK, or HEC Paris and Bocconi University in Europe, are also highly regarded by employers in these sectors.

Remember, while the reputation of your university can open doors, your personal achievements, internships, and networking efforts play a crucial role in securing positions in highly competitive fields like investment banking and consulting.

Really? A target?

I know it’s a very strong business school in the EU, but isn’t calling SSE a target in London a bit disingenuous?

Especially since we’re talking about masters here?

To OP
It’s simply not on the same level as Oxford MFE or LSE MFin or LBS MFA (and even they have struggled these last couple of years with placement).

But it’s still a very solid option. Mainly because:
- it’s a strong brand in EU and in the nordics, with recruiting pipelines into the best firms. So you can definitely build a solid CV there.
- it’s free
- it’s 2 years. More time to enjoy student life and more time to get internships/network, etc.

I would simply recommend reaching out to as many alums from the school/programme who are working in London as you can.
