How to reneg a merit-based scholarship

Hello monkeys,

I am lucky enough to receive an offer for a US MSc in Management with a $13000 merit-based scholarship. Unfortunately, my financial situation requires me to reneg for a higher scholarship, as I have exhausted lending options and family support.

How do you write an email/letter to reneg this? As it is a merit-based scholarship, I think I should talk about my merits, but I'm not sure what the focus should be.

If you guys could please let me pick your brain for areas I should portray myself in and also ideas that would convince the admission, I would be very grateful.

Many thanks in advance!
