HEC Paris: too old and too little experience?
Hi all,
I'm (25M) about to start my last year of a master's in public health degree at an Ivy League university. I'm also an equity researcher at a Hong Kong bank covering the healthcare industry.
Lately, I've become very interested in applying to HEC MiM, HEC International Finance, Essec MiM, and ESCP MiM. I have a 3.75 GPA from undergrad top-21 in the U.S. and a 4.0 GPA in my current master's program. Assuming I get at least the average accepted score on the GMAT, would I have a fair shot at any of these programs? Also, would I have an okay chance of winning an IB analyst internship?

What are your motivations to do that?
My motivation to study at HEC:
1- excellent teaching (grand école)
2- international student body >80% international
3- networking with large alumni network
4- extra curricular activities and option to specialize
My motivation to go into IB:
1- great way to learn about many different sectors and finance in a short amount of time
2- exit opportunities

ESSEC MiM student here (I'm 25 and about to finish my programme). I started at ESSEC when I was 22, but I had friends who were 26 when they joined ESSEC (they had to do military service in their countries, they took one year out to work, etc...). Honestly speaking you have a pretty decent shot at HEC, ESSEC and ESCP with your GPA and international profile. Get a good GMAT score and you'll get at least one offer from the top 3 schools.
Regarding the IB analyst internship question, yes that'd be no problem.

Hi! Congratulations on making it thus far! It seems like you accomplished a lot in 25 years, and ESSEC is an amazing school as you probably know. Do you know anyone who did not have IB/PE/etc. on their CV before the program started and was able to find an analyst role during/after the program? Thanks!
Thank you! To answer your question, yes. I have two friends (one of them being 27 years old) who had no finance work experience before joining ESSEC and now they're both working as analysts in front office roles (with their visas sponsored as they're not EU nationals). It's a pretty competitive market but if you do enough networking once you make it here you will definitely break into IB if that's what you want!
PS: your health education will be super useful if you want to join healthcare-related IB teams, those teams really want people with a healthcare/med/pharma background ;)

Yes, because (1) I lack previous internship experience and (2)the average starting age is 23.
ESCP is way lower than the rest. Also, I would not consider ESSEC as being part of the best european programs in management. Only, HEC is worth it in France, if you do not speak French at all, the rest no way.
Interesting, I've always heard that HEC>ESSEC>=ESCP. When you say better, are you referring to career outcomes, student life, instruction quality. etc.?
I've been told ECSP is for rich snobby kids only who want to have 3yrs of partying and 5 minutes of working.
