CUHK Quantitative Finance and Risk Management job prospects
Recently I got accepted to CUHK's QFRM, my first choice in HK. A set of factors didn't let me apply for a business degree, and my passion for juggling numbers is not something I want to waste, so my choice fell on this program. What are my prospects in HK's IB? WSO zoo's views on this university are controversial af, and I see that CUHK consistently ranks lower than HKU and UST, but there still are people saying that CU is on par and sometimes better. Also, please note that I'm a Russian from Middle Asia, proficient in three languages, none of which is SE Asian. Although I can't say for sure, I believe that I'm able to boost my Mandarin up to a level needed for business communications in 2-3 years.
First of all, congrats on your offer.
If you are interested specifically in IB in Hong Kong, it’s hard for a foreigner coming out of a local school. You can run a quick Linkedin search to see how many non-Chinese IB Analysts there are out there — close to none. Speaking working proficiency Mandarin won’t help much, you need to be a native speaker. Having said this, CU is a good school and QFIN is a strong program. If you’re interested in S&T or other non-IB roles, it will position you well for those.
What are the exit opportunities in the case you described? Also, I'm kind of a baby monke, don't really know much about the roles outside the IB. Aren't those positions in HK perspectively less interesting or lucrative? And finally, is it common or easy to transfer to London or NYC out of HK in case I wish to continue my career elsewhere? Can I switch to IB when transferring?
If you wish to build your future career outside of Asia why would you do your undergrad here in the first place. It’s all about what options you have at the moment.
For IB roles in Hong Kong, ideal candidate is a native Chinese/Asian language speaker educated in a top US/UK target.
You can do your research about other non-IB career paths when you have free time, plenty of threads on this forum.
Any updates? Did you go to CUHK? I am interested in QFIN/QFRM program too. It would be good to get some updates from you,
Hi there! Yes, I did go to CUHK and did choose QFRM eventually. DM me if you need to know something specific
