Can I get in to MIT / Berkeley MBA?

I am wondering if I have the background / experience to get into MIT or Berkeley MBA program.

I went to Georgia tech undergrad in industrial engineering with a 3.7 gpa. I work at Deloitte doing technology (Sap) consulting. Would like to leave after 2-3 years of experience. Haven't taken the GMAT yet but expect to be able to get 680-710.

Any advice to improve my chances would be much appreciated!

What makes you unique i.e. volunteering & hobbies?

3.7: check (a plus considering it's eng) georgia tech: meh Deloitte sap: meh 2 years: too low for HAAS. might be low for Sloan GMAT 680-710: meh for Sloan. In line for HAAS white male (sounds like you'd be): no benefit

Soooo....3 "meh"s = not competitive*. What you can do: 1. Get your shit together and do better on the GMAT 2. Get some really interesting volunteering & hobbies in your app and round out your story 3. Move to Deloitte strategy

  • I'm not saying this is automatic ding. You can apply and pray day and night that you get in. And you might. But don't plan on it

How is Georgia Tech or Deloitte SAP Consulting "meh" for b-school? You have no idea what you are talking about.

3.7 in engineering from Georgia Tech is very strong, and Deloitte is a very good company. @JohnnyKnocke Do you see yourself getting a promotion in that timeframe or soon after? That's a good plus on an application.

You should be alright, were you in any extra curricular activities? And have you held any leadership positions?

@EngBanker: Have you been to/applying at MBA programs? Your profile says you are a 2nd year IB Analyst..That is the major problem I have with these boards, people giving advice without any experience on the subject.

Just a data point, I applied this cycle (got an interview) and had a 3.6/760. So anecdotal evidence would suggest you're on the path to being competitive . Just make sure to do well on your GMAT.

I think we need a little bit more information about your background. You have good stats, but nothing really stands you out amongst the throng of other IT consulting professionals. You need a good extra curricular / volunteer activity to speak of. It will also help if you are either an under-represented minority or female. Most of the time, it's a crap shoot because everyone has similar resumes and numbers as yours. You just need to write well crafted essays and make sure you are memorable.

Hey guys...funny this thread was brought back to life because I posted it a year and 5 months ago, so I can now answer my own question. I got a 710 on the GMAT and I think I was able to make myself stand out. I applied to MIT, Harvard, Booth and Columbia. Accepted at Columbia...Denied at the other 3 and couldnt be happier!

@Yeahright: Thank you. 3.7 at GT is highest honors and Deloitte is one of the top 5 feeder schools at HBS. Not McK or anything, but still a good company.

Awesome! Thank you for coming back and sharing the results of your profile with us. Not many people do that. What card did you play in order to help yourself stand out in your essays?
