Berkeley Haas MBA is waiving GRE/GMAT requirement for Berkeley alumni during Covid. Legit or too good to be true?
Berkeley's Haas School of Business just today sent out an e-mail to all UC Berkeley undergraduate seniors and alumni that it's offering a special program for the next few months due to COVID-19. This program is accepting spots into Haas' MBA program for either full-time or part-time MBAs, for the Fall 2020 semester. Additionally, for UC Berkeley undergrads and alumni, the GRE/GMAT requirement will be waived only for the summertime, and they have until mid or late June (depending on evening vs full-time) to apply.
Here's the website for this program: https://info.haas.berkeley.edu/mba-cal-advantage
I have a high GPA from UC Berkeley (like a 3.9), majoring in Economics, and I've had good work experience doing marketing at a tech company in the Bay with promotions. Also good WE serving on the board of a local nonprofit and doing philanthropy during COVID. However, one thing holding back my application was my poor results on the GMAT (I got a 620, I also had a shit SAT score), and apparently this waives that. Also, as part of this program, UC Berkeley seniors and alumni only have to submit one letter of recommendation, and only have to do one essay. Also, there is the option to submit your resume to the program after you've been admitted, and any interviews conducted will be online.
This sounds awesome and perfect to me, but I have reasons to be skeptical. One, isn't this like straight up R3 territory for UC Berkeley, with most people in the Fall 2020 MBA class having applied way back in November or whatever? And all those people took the GRE or GMAT, did super well, had multiple LORs, etc. That means this sounds like a gimmick for Haas' MBA program to get money from people applying while not accepting than many people. Maybe they had less revenue from COVID-19 and are trying to fill it up.
Moreover, even if they say GRE/GMAT not required, or you only need one letter of rec, or only doing one essay, or only having to submit your resume after admissions, do they really mean it? Or are you still "Expected" to go above and beyond and do multiple essays, get multiple LORs, and submit your resume to be competitive?
Are they doing this only to accept super extraordinary people? What do you think? I'll apply anyway because "hey why not," but I'm not sure how legit this in and what my chances would be.
