Australia MBB Suggested Recruitment Routes?

Hi everyone,

I am currently an Australian high school student, who just finished the HSC. I am planning for accepted entry into Sydney University for a Bachelor of Commerce. I am looking to break into management consulting in my future, with a focus on an MBB. What would be the suggested route / grades / subjects / summer internships etc to take to maximize employment possibilities.

Also, I'm planning to do an exchange for possibly 6 months, what countries have the best business prospects?

If you want to get into MBB with a straight commerce degree you are going to have to get incredibly strong marks and have some pretty good extra curricular achievements (or vice-versa). Most MBB hires are Comm/Law or STEM types who you will have to compete with. MBB likes people with diverse backgrounds, so a variety of internships could suit e.g. niche corporate strategy roles, investment banking/equity research and technical roles (engineering, data science etc.). I wouldn't put all your focus into getting into MBB, there are relatively few spots and a lot of other interesting careers you should consider in tandem with MBB.

Begin by securing a 75+ WAM, get involved in ECs (business societies, case competitions, projects i.e. 180d consulting), aim to land 1-2 pre-penultimate internships (Sydney has a program called IPP). Once you have that covered (should be in your penultimate year now), aim to land a tier-2 (Kearney, LEK, OW) or Big-4 consulting internship over the summer. This will position you to apply for an MBB grad position at the start of your final year. With all the above taken care of, you'll be in the top tier of candidates. Note, MBB doesn't offer internships in most cities down under, which is why you look to tier-2 or Big-4 for your penultimate internship.
