2 yrs no name IB then 3 yrs corp dev = competitive?
Just wanted to see if this pre-mba profile would be competitve for a top 15 program.
2 years as analyst at a no name IB, then 3 years corp dev at a $2B Energy Co.
Undergrad at a division 1 state non-target GPA: 3.2
Masters from top school (non-ivy but ranked above brown and cornell) GPA: 3.3
GMAT: 710
Great letters (Managing Partner of the IB and CFO of the Energy Co.)
Does this seem like a competitive applicant?
You are missing a lot of information. Do you have any good ECs, do you do any community service, how are your app essays looking like...
I was a Div 1 athlete, donated my hair to locks of love, and have decent essays.
Does growing your hair really count as philanthropy?
Decent profile though, should qualify for Top 15
You should be fine based on what you provided but Essays and recs are key....probably the most important actually. Company brand is vastly overrated, it's far more about what you accomplished and how you communicate said accomplishments.
Undergrad EC's are irrelevant at this point (athlete is good though)...community service is greatly overrated in my observations. Unless you founded something, you might as well not help anyone. It didnt hinder me in the process.
What is it that you'd like to do down the road? You've already had solid experiences as a banker and then in Corp development.. I'm just curious
Not sure. If I could go back to IB as an associate, I would consider it, although I don't know if I burned that bridge when I went to corp dev.
If I'm lucky enough to find a PE spot, I'd like to stay on the buy-side. If all else fails, I'll stay in corp dev for a few years to pay off student loans and then I'll start-up, if I don't get a heavily stock optioned director/VP level position in corp dev.
Anyone have advice?
gotcha.. how would you compare your corp dev gig to IB? quite interested to hear.. good luck!
More structured, less entrepreneurial, slower paced, fewer hours but every company is different, that goes for IB as well. I'm curious about what kind of exit ops I'd have coming out of the mba. Have I officially been pigeon holed?
I'm sure you could go to a bank as an associate if you want. You would have 5 years of directly related work experience. It's not like leaving banking will preclude you from going back. Could do corp dev as a senior associate, maybe go to a small PE fund if you can find one that has a need
