What do RE interns do?
I'm about to join ES/JLL/CBRE as an intern this upcoming summer in NYC, and I feel like I have no idea what I am going to be doing. Is there anyone that can answer these questions:
-
What do interns do in terms of modeling?
-
What are the typical hours for an intern?
-
Any advice?
I have been practicing some modeling and I am absolutely atrocious and I just don't really know how much they expect. Anyways, I figured it would be nice to get some feedback from you older folks in RE.
.
In terms of UW, how much do you think they expect you to do?
Do you have any idea about the hours for an intern?
I really appreciate the input
This is an unusually significant workload for an intern.
Typically I'd say interns are expected to learn and not much more on most teams. You'll be expected to sit in on meetings and calls, maintaining meeting minutes, helping put together pitch books (very unlikely to be drafting verbiage - moreso the powerpoint side of it), and ideally some modeling work. It's unlikely they expect you to be proficient in modeling but moreso have a basic understanding and be ready to learn.
As long as you're willing to work hard and not a jackass, I wouldn't worry about it. No one expects interns to be putting out the work product of a full time employee; internship programs are as much about helping you learn (so you'll join the firm FT later on) as they are about you doing anything super valuable.
I can't speak to your specific firm obviously, but intern experiences are really dependent on who you're working for, not where. Some people are more interested in helping to mentor younger people, some people just want a go-fer
It depends on the firm. Some interns do work such as underwriting etc and some interns will be tasked with basic research tasks, cleaning rent rolls, etc. sit in on meetings. Unfortunately 2-3 months of work isn’t too much time and it depends on if the team you work with wants to train you or not. Your job is to say yes to everything and be nice to be around and hopefully get an offer back.
