What analyst opportunity to take in this market?
Would you take a capital markets analyst role at one of the big shops in a secondary market on an active team (JLL, CBRE, C&W). Or an asset management role at a company with 5-10B in AUM. Not as interested in AM but seems more stable given the market.
I have a year-ish experience in AM at a small family office. Wasn’t as excited with the day to day and I’ve always had an itch to try one of the analyst programs at a big shop. Not sure if brokerage is the end goal but if I had the opportunity to perform at the highest level I would.
Do a lot of people leave the ownership side to go investment sales/debt & equity or would I be dumb to do so? And if I made the switch and after a while I didn’t like it, is it hard to switch back to ownership after grinding it out as a capital markets analyst?
If you’re looking to get to the investment side, I’d say brokerage in general. If you’re looking at this from a nuanced lens, I’d weigh what you are actually asset managing and what the company reputation is. Someone working at KKR doing asset management would place better on the acquisitions side versus someone at CBRE doing IS
For someone with 1 YOE, take the capital markets role. You'll learn more, provided your team is doing deals.
