Wealth Management to CRE (Sperry Van Ness)
I currently have a job in WM, have for a few years now as an investment analyst/PM. I'm not loving it, I like the analysis I get to do but, frankly, the job is a bit boring, especially since I work at a pretty small shop.
I have an interview coming up to be a broker at Sperry Van Ness in the Midwest. From the initial conversation, I know that I'd have a draw from the firm, and apparently can work as a W2/1099 hybrid for a while I get my certifications and legs under me. It's an eat-what-you-kill position, with a 55/45 commission split starting out. There is, from what I was told, a fairly robust training program in place for new, younger brokers.
I have a list of questions to ask during the interview, but do any of you have advice for a first-time broker? What do I need to know before going into CRE? Assume I know nothing, because that is essentially true. Also, planning on doing the WSO real estate master package, so if anyone has any comments about that, much appreciated.
Personally transitioned from WM to CRE 4 months ago. I was at a small shop as well and also felt bored lol.
Courses are definitely a good idea like the one you mentioned! Break in to CRE's Financial Modeling bootcamp would be a good way to learn some of the fundamentals of commercial real estate & simple excel modeling. Even if you wont be working in underwriting/analysis, having a foundation in excel is always good.
Good luck with the interview!
I definitely have a solid base in Excel. Probably nothing compared to some of the better guys here but I can run pivot tables, xlookup, indexmatch, etc etc with some limited VBA knowledge. Most of my knowledge is about using large datasets, a little less experience with true modeling, but that's why I was looking into the course so great to hear you think thats a good idea.
Are you glad you switched? How's it going so far?
