What's the general consensus about working as an IR Relations at PE funds ranging from micro to the megafunds?

Obviously everyone here wants to do development/acquisition/assetmanagemnet/brokerage but there isn't really talk about being in Investor Relations

I don't work in IR, however, it isn't a bad role from what i've been exposed to. Despite all the shit-talk from hardos, it's not bad. You would gain lots of qualitative experience communicating construction / distribution updates through memos as well as be very involved in capital raises on the debt and equity side. Comp is obviously below what you would get in Acq / AM / Brokerage, however, you will have a way better work-life balance, so might be worth it depending on what your priorities are.

That is what I’ve been told as well… better work life balance and not being in Excel as much.

What would you say the stereotypical IR person is? Beyond being “female and attractive” lol. Is there a personality type you’re seeing more often?

If you’re gonna do IR, do it at a corporate PE fund. I don’t see why someone would choose a REPE fund. More cyclical and the returns and comp will be fs less. Also less opportunities and harder to lateral I’d imagine. If you’re in IR you’ll be fundraising. You shouldn’t stick to real estate because the nature of job will be far separated from the asset. Just choose the best fund that cares about the IR role. Can be a cushy job at a normal private equity GP if you’re at a good fund. This is a fundraising role. Far different than corporate investor relations which is what the “attractive girl” thing comes from.

I'm guessing OP might be trying to break into CRE, or be considering an IR job given the terrible state of acquisitions and development hiring at the moment. In my opinion it seems like a decent option. The IR guys have to know their shit - one of my old coworker / friends in the energy industry was constantly bombarded by our public investors wanting to know ever number behind the latest investor deck etc.

Comp is definitely below deal guys at all levels but you can still make millions at the MD level with carry. Top performers at PE funds live very very comfortably. Stereotype of being female and pretty has truth to it but I would say that’s only at junior to mid levels in the non-fundraising teams. Rainmakers are mainly men. My dad is head of an IR region at a large PE fund and clears millions because of the carry. So there’s definitely very good upside but make sure you join the team that is the client facing fundraising team and not the IR project management/marketing team (all girls)… it’s very different.
