How to back out of an offer!?

So, basically, I got an offer from a decent firm (firm A) and then I continued interviewing and landed a better offer (firm B). I've accepted the offer from firm B and have to back out of the one I have. I graduate in May and the principal at firm A is a really nice guy, so is everybody else there. I get invited to happy hours, a few alumni there that I really vibe with so when they go out they invite me as well, that way I'll be comfortable when I actually start. Firm B is in NYC and much bigger/better "brand name" it's just where I want to be. How do I back out in a way that causes the least amount of damage? Should I just get drunk the next time we go out and announce it to the whole team? Should I not show up on my intended start date and ignore all communication until they get the message?

That is tough. I think you should rip the bandaid off and let the person in charge know. Definitely do not leave them ghosted, considering they spent time with you, made you an offer, and you have alumni that work there. It is easier said than done, but you should let them know and not mislead them.

Do not get drunk and announce it to the team and do not ghost them. Just call them and explain you’ve decided to go in a different direction. You do not need to explain what or where or how. Life happens. Just be nice. Think about how you might want to hear the news Someone is backing out and use that as a basis for delivering it.

From your proposed methods of doing this, you seem scared to do it. Don’t be scared. Take care of yourself and do what is best for you.

I was kidding about the methods I proposed lol. I'm not scared but I just feel like a dick. I only accepted the offer just to have a job in case I didn't get the one I want.
