The main reading material (re alert, commercial mortgage alert, real estate finance, property week for europe) will all be expensive as a single user and are mostly supplied by companies for their employees.

If you can figure out to get access to WSJ (I think you can just google search the titles to get past the paywall?) their weekly commercial RE articles that come out on Wednesday are good for following general trends in the RE industry and will give you something to talk about in interviews.

Yep. Plus check out Cassidy Turley, Transwestern, etc. quarterly regional/national market reports. Every couple of weeks just go to one of the large commercial brokerage firms websites and most of them have a new or research tab where they put case studies/market reports/development or leasing activity/etc. Also, if you can find out the name of a specific fund within a PERE that has public employee pension fund investors, they will sometimes have their quarterly fund prospectus PDF's online.

i think this has been talked about before. i like the Deal ( http://www.thedeal.com/real_estate.php ) ... but the usual suspects are costar (which has local sections), reit.com , the real estate section of dealbook ( http://dealbook.nytimes.com/category/real-estate/ ) just to make sure you don't miss a major IPO or merger, realert.com , cmalert.com

another way to be on top of local stuff is your local business paper. for example, if you're in Phoenix, http://www.bizjournals.com/phoenix/

RealDeal is good, also reach out to Brokers in the respective markets to see what they use
