Changing locations in Texas from Dallas to Houston
My wife wants us to end up in Houston post MBA. I work as a debt broker now (we do business all over in multiple states). Was wondering if any of the peeps here ever moved locales and stayed in real estate.
I did as a banker. There are a lot of mortgage brokers in Houston. Do you have your own book of business?
Building it now
Sounds like you're staying in mortgage brokerage (which is great, I'd rather be a broker than a banker like I am now). Hopefully you can keep doing business with most of your Dallas contacts as you work on developing south Texas business.
Down here, the veteran JLL team just opened a Walker & Dunlop office after the HFF merger.
I made a similar move in I-sales. Stayed in the region and with the firm, but wanted to switch cities. They let me continue with the book of business in the old city until I was on my feet in the new, and eventually phased in a team to take my place in the old state (moved to a primary from a secondary). Like any change, you'll have a slower year at first. Might be different on the debt side as you guys are a little more macro. It's a great opportunity to test your firms loyalty.
I actually think the move would have been easier going from a primary to a secondary, as the bench is usually not as deep. Houston is diversifying though, and eyes are starting to move there - unless those eyes are a Dallas native of course...
