Top Cities for Private Equity in US and Internationally

Just out of curiosity, what would be your top 5 or so private equity markets in the US and Internationally for private equity activity? Obviously, NYC is tops in the US, but I'm assuming that Chicago, Houston, Dallas, and DC probably get a fair share, right? Also, even though Euro cities are probably doing well in this area right now, do you see any China or India cities becoming hotbeds for private equity in the near future?

^Hmm no Chinese cities on the list for private equity? Also, how are Mumbai, Bangalore, and some of the other big Indian cities as far as PE activity is concerned or is Delhi virtually the only one in that space?

Pretty women make us BUY beer. Ugly women make us DRINK beer.

Well, in PE space, you have got LPs (specially PE FoF guys) and GPs.. While worling with a PE Market Research Firm, had a chance to work on FundForum.. What fascinated me was Fund Placement Agents..

Have had difficulty tracking FundPlacements..

Suggestion: Top Conferencesof the Industry have TOP guys as Speakers..

Easy to track PE with CapIQ and other DBs.. Just information in this era of banking does cost you a lot..

Mia from Mumbai

madrid, milan, hamburg, munich have some presence .

in germany it is frankfurt>munich>hamburg>everything else

paris also has quite a lot of presence

Why is everyone leaving out Chicago. Chicago is definitely top 3 cities in the US. All the following firms are in Chicago. Flow.

There's more industrials deal flow in Chicago than TMT flow in SF. Plus, the Chicago/great lakes region has more economic diversity than SF. If SF is top 3 for TMT, then Houston should be as well for energy.

NY>LA>Chicago>Boston>SF>DC>Houston/Dallas>Miami>Seattle for PE

^ Then: Tier 1 - NY, Boston, Chicago, LA Tier 2 - SF, Houston/Dallas, Miami, Seattle, DC Tier 3 - Charlotte, Baltimore, Detroit, Cleveland, Minneapolis, Phoenix, Philly, Milwaukee, Denver, St. Louis, Austin, etc.

International: Tier 1 - Hong Kong, London, Frankfurt, Zurich, Tokyo Tier 2 - Dubai, Caymans/Bermuda, Shanghai, Mumbai

Internationally you can't forget Munich (instead of Frankfurt). Zurich I'm not too sure about.

I'm talking about liquid. Rich enough to have your own jet. Rich enough not to waste time. Fifty, a hundred million dollars, buddy. A player. Or nothing. See my Blog & AMA

Tier 1 : NYC, SF, LA Tier 2 : Boston, Chicago, Houston, Charlotte, D.C.

  • Banker who is interviewing with PE firms now

ajg stop trolling for chicago. "There's more industrials deal flow in Chicago than TMT flow in SF." lol you are so wrong.

SF is not just TMT, you have healthcare, sponsors/levfin, M&A, Gaming, etc.

It's true, I have a Chicago bias, but I am more concerned about the regard given to SF.

Gaming in SF?? really.

Sponsors/LevFin is not an industry. That's like saying PE/Lending.

By the way, there is much more healthcare PE in Chicago than SF - Water Street Healthcare Partners, Roundtable Healthcare Partners, Frontenac, Flexpoint, Beecken Petty O'Keefe, Linden

SF/Menlo Park has 33 of the PEI top 300 firms, if you include TPG (not really based in Ft Worth) and NEA (HQ is really on Sand Hill Rd in the Valley). Boston has 21, if you include Providence Equity (45 min drive from Boston, similar to Menlo).

Chicago has 6 of the top 300. LA has 8.

NYC is the Mecca of US private equity. SF and Boston are right behind, supported by their VC funds but they also have megafund HQs (SF has KKR, TPG, Silver Lake; Boston has Bain, Advent, Providence and THL). Chicago and LA have good sized PE industries but not the same level as SF/Boston and nowhere near NYC.

Toronto has a surprising amount of flow that not a lot of people know about. Especially companies in materials and energy. The transactions usually arn't that big but a lot of smaller transactions adds up, and it even continued to grow through 2008-2009. Standard of living in Toronto is pretty good too. I'm not complaining.

You guys are clueless -- as gomes said, NY is the clear #1 for PE/VC, with SF and Boston right behind. Chicago and LA are still good for PE/VC, but not on the same level as the top three.

yeah - just so there is no confusion here for the youngsters, NY is absolutely not the place to be for VC. Silicon Valley is, THEN cambridge.
