MF RE vs MF Infra
Currently working in a vanilla corporate PE shop but looking to explore options in either RE / infra. Both are interesting to me, leaning towards RE, but infra seems stable as well (think generally the “golden age of infra” likely won’t last for too long, could be wrong). Looking to hear thoughts for one as opposed to the other? Anyone moved between the two?
When considering a move from a vanilla corporate PE shop to either Real Estate (RE) or Infrastructure (Infra) within the context of Mega Funds (MF), it's essential to weigh the unique characteristics and future prospects of each sector. Based on insights from the WSO dataset, here are some key points to consider:
Real Estate (RE):
Infrastructure (Infra):
Moving Between RE and Infra:
Decision Factors:
In conclusion, both RE and Infra offer unique opportunities and challenges. While RE might appeal to those looking for active management and cyclical market dynamics, Infra could be more attractive for individuals seeking stability and a focus on sustainability. Consider your career aspirations, risk tolerance, and the sectors' future prospects when making your decision.

curious as well
Gonna be interning at a Tier 1 REPE MF (BX/MSREI/Starwood), and would say it's much better than infra. My friends at MIRA/GIP, while working on bigger deals with more sophisticated financial engineering, are miserable and mostly want to exit to entrepreneurship/chinese women.
I’ve only heard legends about this last exit.
Really? Heard insane thinks about MSREI’s financial engineering pre-08. Raising $7b opportunistic funds.
If you are leaning towards RE then I’d say go for that and then you could likely lateral to infra later on. I know a few people working in infra and they almost all came from a real estate background. There’s a decent amount of overlap since they are both real assets, but infra is much more granular modeling so the base knowledge you’d get in RE might be helpful to later jump to infra if you wanted to.
