Physical Self Care Advice?

Incoming FT at an EB known for being a sweatshop - was wondering if you guys had any tips to being able to stay looking as healthy and youthful as possible? Do you guys use any products to ensure looking good even with a lack of sleep? Main goal is to avoid aging and losing hair as much as possible. Thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some effective strategies for maintaining your physical health and appearance, even in demanding work environments like investment banking:

  1. Exercise Regularly: Despite a hectic schedule, try to carve out time for physical activity. Short, intense workouts can be effective. Consider exercises that can be done in small spaces or with minimal equipment, like bodyweight exercises.

  2. Nutrition: Focus on a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Avoid excessive consumption of fast food and sugary snacks. Eating one salad a day can help with calorie counting and ensure you get essential nutrients.

  3. Hydration: Keep yourself well-hydrated. Water helps in maintaining skin elasticity and overall health. Avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol as they can dehydrate you.

  4. Sleep: While difficult, try to maximize the quality of sleep you get. Use blackout curtains, eye masks, or white noise machines to improve sleep quality, even if the duration is shorter than ideal.

  5. Skin Care: Invest in a good skincare routine. Products like moisturizers, under-eye creams, and sunscreens can help protect and nourish your skin, combating signs of aging and stress.

  6. Mental Health: Stress management is crucial. Consider practices like meditation, deep-breathing exercises, or short walks to manage stress levels. Remember, mental health significantly impacts physical appearance and well-being.

  7. Social and Family Connections: Whenever possible, maintain social interactions. Calling a family member or friend during breaks can uplift your spirits and reduce stress.

These strategies are not only about maintaining your appearance but also about ensuring your overall well-being while working in a demanding environment. Remember, your health is paramount, and it's important to find a balance that allows you to sustain both your career ambitions and personal health.

trying to look youthful and avoiding aging...vanity is a slipperly slope bro. aging gracefully > trying to be bryan johnson/david sinclair/some other dork who takes 500 supplements, never stays up late, and is no fun to be around. my opinion to be sure, but I am dubious of trying to fight God and the natural aging process. I'd rather be like a Kelly Slater, Gerry Lopez, Megaton Dias, etc., in my 50s and beyond (look my age but be healthy) than have my appearance dependent upon some supps I found on a podcast

the basics - exercise, diet, sleep, stress

exercise - have a routine that gets you moving, play with this over time. have a nice balance of strength, cardio, mobility, and fun (a sport)

diet - lots of genetic variability here so do trial & error, but the important thing is limiting processed garbage (an easy heuristic is if it didn't exist 500 years ago, steer clear), being mindful of portion control, and varying your diet (eating seasonally)

sleep - I'm not a huberman disciple (he's an idiot when it comes to statistics so I don't trust when he says "well this study says so and so") so what I've found is just trying to have a wind down routine, minimizing artificial light before bed, and not stressing yourself out over sleep. our ancestors almost certainly never slept 8 hours straight, so don't get yourself in a tizzy if your whoop data aren't perfect like that pale boring mf bryan

stress - life is stressful, just find a way to manage it. for me prayer, hobbies, nature, sports, reading all help. find what works for you

In the morning if my face is a little puffy I'll put on an ice pack while doing stomach crunches. I can do 1000 now. After I remove the ice pack I use a deep pore cleanser lotion. In the shower I use a water activated gel cleanser, then a honey almond body scrub, and on the face an exfoliating gel scrub. Then I apply an herb-mint facial mask which I leave on for 10 minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use an after shave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion.
