Incoming First Year Analyst

incoming first-year analyst went to a non-target school in Midwest known for engineering, didn't spend much time partying/drinking honestly want to do more of that next year. I won't really know anybody in NYC and didn't get to talk to most of the interns' bc of the virtual setup. What would you suggest to someone to meet people in NYC, do you usually go to bars on weekends with your fellow analysts?

Making friends in a new city always sounds a lot scarier than it actually is. COVID reallllly does not help, but once things open up/if they are open here are my recs:

  1. Coworkers are a great place to start, and making friends with some of their friends is a common way to expand your circle.
  2. Do something you actually enjoy. Whether it is a weekend sports league sort of thing or a book club, worst case you are doing something fun to pass the time. Best case you make some buddies. Volunteering or religious services are also good options.
  3. Idk what school you went to but most have a New York alumni association or something like that, go to those events. Young professional development/networking events can also be a good source.

Also one thing that helps is getting over the fear of doing stuff alone. It is hard to break the college mindset of always signing up for activities with friends and having a go-to group but trust me…no one gives a shit if you are by yourself in a restaurant or weekend class bc they are either focused on talking to the friends they came with or there by themselves too.

Gonna pull up on a street basketball game in Harlem and get dunked on.

Nah but for real, the man who hates networking broke it down pretty easy. There are some additional extracurriculars, but they usually don't involve that many talkative people (think the gym or a cafe).

I'd say if you are working a somewhat normal job to the point that you have lunch breaks outside of your place of work, you could run into some of your competitors at other institutions. These are also people who are fine to mingle with.
