Homeland Security Seizing Domain Names

So I read through some of the comments and apparently taking down websites that sell fake merchandise makes the USA a reincarnation of Nazi Germany.

I download stuff all the time and I hate the RIAA. That doesn't mean I think downloading stuff for free is right or should be legalized. People on the internet either have a remarkably low IQ or think the world runs on altruism. Everyone likes shit for free, but if everyone pirated everything, nothing would be made.

Now I completely agree with the internet reducing margins and bringing down the cost of things. I think the RIAA has their head up their ass and is fighting a losing battle. I think the digital revolution is both scary and incredibly lucrative for anyone willing to dive into it. Look at Itunes, Netflix, Hulu. All changing the business model for content creators and distributors, but all capable of making money and rewarding those who make media.

I want to hear some of your opinions. I consider the majority of people on here to be educated, internet savvy, business minded and young. Curious what your take on things are.

Actually, the only way in which I would say you're incorrect is comparing to the wrong Fascist regime. If you look at the actual operational cogs, the U.S. today is far more reminiscent of Mussolini's Italy in the 1920's. In fact if you do a little digging (beyond the first page of google), you will find that Mussolini's bank policies and treatment of the Italian financial and corporate entities of the day are much more than mirrored by our current president. I also invite anyone who has more than a passing knowledge of the EARLY Blackshirt movement to attempt to make any significant separation between that organization and ACORN.

As far as the RIAA, print media and a million other industries that won't exist in the very near future...there's really nothing different in their rabid protectionism to the grave attitude than the British cotton unionists who tried to burn cotton gins and made death threats against Eli Whitney.

I really don't see much wrong with this picture as a whole. We had more than 10 years to DL whatever we wanted for free. Whoever didn't sorry for ya...and no I don't really think we're a Fascist country...but you know...I like to throw some thoughts out there for consideration.

This has been going for 5-10 years at least. When I was in High School, Pretty sure it was "Attack of the Clones" that was first major wake up call for the feds and hit to the scene. I had friends who were apart of the scene back then, on distributing ftps/share sites giving all the latest movies/games to others some of them are now in law school trying to become corporate lawyers, yah check out that irony. Another a guy quit the scene when he went to university and now works for Microsoft.

Then when Packetnews and the like came about making it so easy, that you just click a link. It was another wake up call. Ninjavideo was the latest casualty as the Feds kicked them off various servers/isps again and again. Because yet again they made it too easy for people.

This battle is going to rage on for a while till the Steve Jobs/Pepsi comes up with something to kick RIAA's ass.

Case in point in 2005, if you were apart of a top scene team. You had access to an ftp with over 500 gigs of movies, you could download at 1mb/s. You could go in your basement and have the latest dvd releases to you within 20 minutes for your viewing pleasure. You could get all the oscar movies within 90 days of their release in great quality.

Now 2010, does netflix even come close to allowing the above. Also I doubt you could watch Inception/Casino Jack/etc on netflix if you logged on right now, but they are on the web somewhere...Till that gap exists the pirates will be active and the feds will chase them.
