What went wrong here?

I had an interview last week for a Treasury advider role at an international company. I have worked with this for a total of 7 years, doing reporting, risk reporting/monitoring and I have meetings with the Front Office every week where I present a forcast and we discuss funding strategies together. I do a lot of reporting, some cash management, some basic fx trade. I have a master degre in pure economics plus some extra subjects in corp finance and risk.

I don’t care about status, but I found the job I applied for interesting because it reminded me of the first job I had, traveling and managing subsidieries. I did very well in that job, and thought I could see if it would be similar

I showed up on time, but the Head of the dep seemed stressed and wanted me to convince him of why I wanted the job so much. He asked if I could present myself, and told me to keep it on my competence and how I could fit tge role. I was prepared for a dialouge…The job description wasn’t all clear to me, but I met 8 out of 11 requirements, so I thought I would be a fit based on that.  Experience with markets was not one of them, but I had everything else that seemed to matter.

Half way through the interview, he comes with a « I will be totally honest with you» and told me in a condecsending way that I was basically doing reporting and he seemed pissed off since he did not care to let us finish the interview. I wanted to know the firm better, but never got to ask my questions. He just said « you could see if we have a job for you in the controller team»

I see on linkedin that 2 of the guys having similar positions have backgrounds as Treasury advisers.

What did I do wrong? I have never felt so humiliated. I have a stronger academic background than the guy, and he was so dismissive. I treated him with respect.

Seems like it’s their fault for not listing the requirements clearly.  If they can’t define the role, it’s possible that it’s a hodgepodge of unrelated tasks that doesn’t translate into a real career path.  Also signs of political disfunction when one person passes you along for an interview and another doesn’t think you are qualified at all.  Finally a sign of a toxic environment if person who doesn’t think you are qualified doesn’t at least follow basic decorum and respect.  You likely dodged a bullet, don’t stress about it.
