UK Visa and work permit authorization

Hi monkeys, I'm from a European country looking to do a summer internship in the UK in 2024. I have never worked in the UK before, and post-Brexit a visa is required (T5 for interns, T2 for graduates).

Maybe a bit of a silly question, but will banks and asset managers sponsor these? Will I get dinged if I enter "no, I don't have the authorization to work in the UK and would require a visa" into the application form? Could it make my odds worse? If that's the case then I might as well only apply to the non-UK offices in Europe.

I'm not usually one to overthink things but I'm genuinely unfamiliar with the system. The work authorization and visa questions have appeared on multiple applications so far.

If someone would be willing to chip in I'd appreciate it - thanks.

Interesting, seems to somewhat contrast with what others are saying. But I can definitely imagine this is the case with consulting. Luckily my school places well into local MBB offices so could always transfer from there I suppose.

Try getting a local internship ( in your home country ) which might place you in London during/after this. I don't believe international internships are a thing in most EU nations, but it won't hurt to ask what they have.

Otherwise, same route as many other face - find a local job and then get transferred. Or, just as said above, get relevant experience and then get hired to the UK with sponsorship. Given the current market climate... maybe some time outside of the UK is a good thing. I have seen EU grads get a visa for the UK, just don't know the numbers in detail (percentage of applicants vs. people who actually got the visa, ..)

Thanks Gumball for the input! Currently doing a DCM internship (league position around #20-#30 in EUR-denominated bonds, leader in local currency) in my home country. Let's see if that's enough experience to catch any employers attention..

Very feasible to get an internship from Europe in the UK. but naturally, with experience its a lot of easier to get the role. Don't think you get dinged cause you are from Europe.

Thanks - that seemed to be my impression after doing some linkedin browsing

Awesome. I have a very strong language background so I'll take this as confirmation bias
