Networking for Lateraling

Hello all,

I've been in my current analyst role for almost a year and was am looking to move into another role. How should I go about networking for a new position especially since there are not many openings currently? Is it possible to recruit for a new grad role and would reaching out to HR be the best bet for figuring that out?

I went to a target university, so am planning on reaching out to alumni, yet do not know how to approach it if there are no openings at their firm.

When considering a lateral move in your career, especially in a tight job market, networking becomes an invaluable tool. Here are some strategies, drawing from the WSO content, to help you navigate this process effectively:

  1. Leverage Your Alumni Network: Since you mentioned attending a target university, tapping into your alumni network is a smart move. When reaching out, focus on building genuine relationships rather than immediately seeking job opportunities. Inquire about their experiences, seek advice, and express your interest in potentially exploring opportunities at their firm in the future. This approach can lead to referrals or insider information about upcoming openings.

  2. Engage Across Different Levels: Don't limit your networking efforts to senior-level professionals only. Analysts and associates are often more accessible and can provide valuable insights into the recruiting process and firm culture. They might also be more willing to advocate on your behalf if an opportunity arises.

  3. Utilize LinkedIn and Other Platforms: LinkedIn is a powerful tool for identifying and connecting with potential contacts within your target firms. Use it to find alumni or professionals with similar career paths. When reaching out, personalize your messages to increase the chances of getting a response.

  4. Attend Industry Events and Conferences: Participating in industry events, webinars, and conferences can expand your network and keep you informed about the latest trends and potential job openings. These settings offer natural opportunities to connect with professionals in your desired field.

  5. Consider Cold Outreach: If there are specific firms or roles you're interested in, don't hesitate to reach out directly to professionals working in those areas. Craft a concise, respectful message expressing your admiration for their work and your interest in learning more about their career path. While not everyone will respond, this can be an effective way to make new connections.

  6. Follow Up and Stay in Touch: After making a new connection, remember to follow up and keep the relationship alive. Share updates about your career, ask for advice, or offer something of value. This ongoing engagement can make you top of mind when opportunities arise.

Regarding recruiting for a new grad role, it's essential to assess whether your experience aligns with the expectations for those positions. Reaching out to HR can provide clarity on this matter, but leveraging your network to get insights and potentially a referral might be more effective in landing an interview.

Remember, networking is a long-term investment. Approach it with the mindset of building relationships and adding value, and it will pay dividends in your career advancement.
