How to get around overbearing team members
Somewhat recent An1 in IB M&A, had a somewhat typical onboarding process with our analyst class last year and am now at a point where I feel I'm past the 'rookie' status on the desk.
We have an An2 & As1 in our team that have a common tendency to really belittle and dumb down anything for the current An1 class, both feeling the need to talk down unnecessarily to all An1 on the team.
Obviously, IB comes with the expectation of a high standard of work, but overcomplicating small tasks and micro-managing anything to just have some sense of seniority is so unneeded.
I know this is quite a common tendency in the industry from management, but in this case, our senior team members (VP, ED, MD level) are much better at delegating and have actually picked up on the two members of our team, although both the An2 & As1 are somewhat good performers in the team so no action has ever really been taken.
My mindset had been to either triple-check anything for them so that they have nothing to pick up on or to make their actions so obvious that the entire team are aware, but would really appreciate any input or advice ...
For context, An1 in MM IB M&A (think Stifel, Moelis, Houlihan, etc.)
Be favourited by your seniors more that their opinion and belittlement doesn’t matter to you. It’s honestly the hardest thing about the industry is dealing with a bunch of alpha people who can only hold their worth to their job but sometimes being politically correct can be the most rewarding long term. Following up by asking “what did you mean by that?” allows them to repeat their horrible comments and adjust sometimes if they do have a social awareness.
Been in the exact same spot at one of those banks. Just slow down and do good work. Take a step back and see if there’s a “sanity test” you can do to make sure you captured all data / the data makes sense.
Thinking through things in a different perspective can give you confidence in your work - sounds like that’s what you need right now.
