Canceling first-round the day before
Hi everyone,
I just found out I received from one of my top choice firms. I like the culture, the people are cool and I overall see myself there post-grad. Yesterday, however, I booked a first-round interview at a MM/EB. It's a great firm, the recruiter was sweet and so were the associates but would it be alright to cancel the interview the day before? I'm looking at it from the stance that it opens up another slot for someone else but is it alright to cancel it?

do you mean you received an offer from your top choice firm? If yes, then yes you should gracefully cancel. At the minimum, that way you aren't wasting the interviewer's time.
Yeah, I received an offer from my top choice. Right, I didn't want to feel like an ass and waste his time. Is it alright to mention in the email that I received another offer? I just don't want to sound like a prick because he was really accommodating during mid-term and I do want to keep him as a contact.
I am just a student but I was recently in this situation twice, where I got an interview after getting another offer that I was gonna take. What I did was thank them for their time, how you liked talking to them, and enjoyed learning more about the firm (I am assuming you would have networked before) yada yada. however, you have received another offer (don't need to name the firm, especially cuz if your offer was from GS and the firm you were interviewing with was Nomura, it'll look like you are flexing) that you plan on accepting and thus would like to take yourself out of the process at the firm. Again, thank you for your time, and you hope to keep in touch.

That sounds smooth I really appreciate it. I don't want to make it bigger than it seems but they do recruit on campus and I'm pretty sure the recruiter told them about me because I didn't network there. Again, I don't know if I'm looking too deep into it but I'll go with what you have. My top choice is back in my home country so I'm hoping that makes sense to them.
Yeah, one of the companies that contacted me regarding a superday after I got an offer from my top choice also recruited on campus. Didn't really network at that firm either, so I don't think that should be a problem for you. Out of curiosity, are you an international student?
Sound good, I'll go with what you said then. On paper, I'm not anymore because I was able to gain US citizenship but my goal was to head back to Paris or London after undergrad. Are you an int. student and did it feel risky turning down an offer for another?
gotcha gotcha. Yeah I am an international student but didn't feel risky at all tbh cuz I already got the offer. I definitely felt uncertain when I was recruiting without an offer but I really liked the group I got my offer from, so pretty happy about it. Plus, the firms that I turned down kinda sucked in comparison to the offer I originally got. So, I am assuming you are gonna go back to London/paris?
Regardless, good shit landing on landing something for next Summer especially with everything going on. Being an international student as well, the odds are also stacked up against you. You also mentioned you had options as well so you should be proud of yourself. I definitely want to do my summer in Paris/London and potentially come back to that firm's US location for FT. European IB banks require a Msc more often than not so I don't know if I want to do that right away. Do you mind sending me a pm? I wanted to run the email by you if that's cool
