Average age IB analyst
I want to ask to some veterans or experts if the age has a big role to break in IB.
My current situation is that I graduate BSc economics in October 2023, than 1 year in BDO(yes not a B4 but I think is good too) and after that apply for MSc finance at RSM, now I'm 24 and when the master's degree ends I'll be 28, will I be able to have any opportunities in the market?
You'll be fine. A lot of people (especially in London) enter the industry at roughly that age because they qualified as an accountant and did ACA before going in to IB

Sure - I am about to start as an IB Analyst at 26 in London. A lot of my friends who did masters in Continental Europe are gonna start as Analyst too at 25/26/27 and some at 29 and even 30!Once you hit the desk nobody's gonna look at your age, it's your abilities that are gonna matter the most.You only go to university once in your life (unless you decide to go for a MBA later) better spend time at uni during your 20s, then land in the right job and have a stellar career that suits you than rushing to the job market and have to go back to uni at some point because you want to shift careers or because you have a shit job.Good things take time.

Not relevant, but why is your masters course 3/4 years? Or is it a part-time thing?
Bro is saying he’s gonna graduate university at 24, work for 1 year before applying to school (25), enroll in school the following year (26), then graduate 2 years later (28). I don’t think age of analyst matters, but that doesn’t mean this is a great plan. Don’t understand UK market enough to opine.

Just curious - for those of you who joined late, do you ever find it unusual to be e.g. an analyst at 27/28/29, when you might have a VP above you who's younger than you (eg someone who started at 21/22 and made VP 4 years in)?

At my bank there have been similar situations where an intern was 30 whereas the analyst above 24
At first it is a bit awkward, but once they saw it as intern with 0 years of experience vs analyst with 1 year the mentality changes

Hi. Your concerns are valid, but 1. You don’t explicitly provide your age on a resume, in fact, it is illegal for an employer to even ask your age. And 2. I think most of banking is becoming more open to “non-traditional backgrounds” ie. Not everyone goes to a 4-yr target school, finishes in time and enters banking. I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing a lot of people for analyst roles and the unconventional backgrounds were always the most exciting / interesting to me.
For reference I started as a 1st year analyst at 26. The associate in my group is younger than me, and even some of the VPs across the bullpen. While interesting, it’s never been a topic of discussion.
I deleted a lot of my prior experience to make it look like a I was a fresh 21/22 college grad to “fit the part”
