Trading vs Research

Hi everyone. Could anyone bother explaining the difference between credit/macro trading and L/S research at HFs. I understand they're two separate things and prospects normally come from different paths. I'm just really looking to know the differences in both as a career path, difference in job functions, exit opps etc, and why would you choose one over the other.

Thanks in advance.
