internship recruiting timeline

I know that banks have already started their processes (some of my friends already even got offers at BBs) but I don't really want to work at banks (assuming I get something), I'm more interested in trying for hedge funds or investment funds. I was wondering when do they really start recruiting? Most of the places I had interviews last year gave me interviews in september/october-november (some even as late as december and jan). So I was wondering when is the right time to apply to funds?
