Breaking into HF

Im halfway through my sophomore year of college as a finance major at a unknown school in my state. My GPA is 2.0 but im going to grind my dick off and get all A's till i graduate (just did it last semester so i know i can do it). Some classes I had to retake because I failed for attendance but do you think a employer would see the work I put into the last 2.5 years of college and it would help my case?

I was doing bad because i wasnt going to class, i was trying to trade the markets with my own money... after getting my dick kicked into the ground I now understand if I want to trade stocks on my own at all, I'd have to learn somewhere first and really get a understanding of the market.

My uncles friend owns a fund and Im going to try and squeeze a internship from him. What should I do to prepare for my internship so I can kill it? I see a bunch of different courses online and was wondering which is the best for me to take trying to become an analyst at a fund

edit

So I was actually able to intern for him last year but i didnt reply to his VP's email to send them my resume. I was all fucked up though like I said, not gonna get into specifics but I didnt know what I wanted to do in my life. Now i have a sense of direction and I can do this. How should i go about talking to him for another oppurtunity? I was thinking "ah he wont remeber or care" but what if he does? what should i say?

I thought it was a fund. Its actually an RIA with $17b AUA. Would this be a good "second" internship if i wanted to strictly go to a HF out of school? Is this even an option for me?

The reason i say "second" is because my dads friend is president of an financial planning firm; smaller office with 4 employees 400+ clients 200mm AUM. He is letting me put on my cv that i interned for him during the summer, he said his sons did the same thing both working at solid tech companies. will this help me out? what should be my action plan?

Are you actually “interning” there? It’s a really bad look if you say you interned there and then you can’t talk about what the firm/you do with them. Would strongly advise you to actually do something for them, even if it’s getting coffee and shutting up while you sit in the corner taking notes. Just something that you can learn from and then talk about later.

Internships are important but if you don’t go to a target/semi-target, have good grades, AND have legit club/internship experience then probably not. Just being honest. Having a barely off-probation type GPA at a random directional school is a really terrible setup to get into a corporate finance job let alone a role thats very difficult to get after multiple years of high-end IB/PE experience.

If I was you, I’d do whatever i could to get into the best 2-3 investing clubs at your school and then learn as much as I could from those clubs, YouTube, etc. If your school doesn’t have one then get like 5 students together and start one. If you know what you do in the job then you can start trying to do those things and put together real ideas which will allow you to then talk stocks a bit with the pros you meet and will let you get some practice with your personal trading.

My school is shit. There’s one club and I think it’s free to join for anyone.
I really fucked myself I guess with my grades. I’m 52 credits in with a 2.6 GPA (a little more then halfway through sophomore year). I’m taking two summer classes and going to get A’s in them and then in the fall semester I’ll get all A’s in 4 classes and that will bring my GPA up into the 3s. I can finish school with a 3.52 if I get all A’s from here on out which I will do because I’m gonna grind my dick off.

Will I be able to get a decent internship with my GPA being around 3.02 if I’m coming off of an internship I get at a RIA this summer? The firm is pretty big with $17b AUA and been in business for 20+ years.

I get that I’m not coming from a non target school, shitty grades and not much experience but I want this shit bad and I’m willing to do whatever it takes.

if I can’t get into a HF straight from undergrad what’s the next best course of action for me? Like where should I be applying for internships going into my senior year next year? By that summer my GPA will be around 3.3, and I’ll get this internship with my uncles friend this summer

I'll try saying this in the kindest way possible... kid, you need a reality check.

  • Yes, you've fucked up.
  • No, there is no way you'll land a spot at a decent HF out of undergrad.
  • Nobody will care about your GPA recovery story. They spend seconds screening your CV and seeing your academic performance will be an instant red flag. Too many 4.0 + BB internship applicants for them to give you a second look.
  • Take the RIA internship, because to put it bluntly: this is all you'll be able to get. Fyi, I'd be surprised if it's as easy as you think. From what you wrote, they didn't offer you an internship but requested your CV (i.e., pre-interview stage)... and you ghosted his VP. Just saying.

Alright, enough roasting. In all honesty: try to land the RIA internship. Be kind and respectful, and make sure they understand that you are in a different place than where you were back then.

I honestly don't think that you have any chance of landing a spot at a MM or decent SM. But why do you even want to got there? What's wrong with AM or WM? That might be a realistic path to pursue.

And P.S. Don't pitch your "I was trading stocks rather than studying"-story to anyone in the industry because I bet you didn't trade but gamble. At least I doubt that anyone hearing your story will think that you were performing financial analyses or built trading algos from your dorm room.

Thanks for this.

I just wanted to come out of undergrad on Wall Street, that’s my goal. I want to be trading stocks with OPM. I don’t want to “advise” people in their portfolios.

I know I can’t do it now since I screwed up with my academics straight from undergrad. Is there a route I could take to get into the HF industry from my current position? What would you do?

I’m definitely open to WM or AM to kick off my career. Would I be able to get into HF’s if my performance is good? How long would the process take? Thanks again

Would it be possible to get into a target business school for my masters with a 3.5 GPA? I went to top private school for high school in NJ also. What grade would I have to get on my gre or gmat? Would going to get my mba open any doors if I got a 4.0?
