Thoughts on changing region
Does anyone have experience in changing region? I have always worked in London and the idea of working in Hong Kong appeals in particular.
The benefits are obvious... more global relevance, experience looking at a new market, etc... and would be an awesome experience on a personal level. But I am less sure on aspects such as for example having to start covering a new client base... am not sure what I think about that having established myself with a solid set of clients over here. I know its something that is clearly possible and done fairly often, but I feel there is likely a trade off in getting a broader client base in experience in more than one market, but losing the momentum you have got with existing clients on the other.
Any thoughts?
Unless your programme is rotational, if any exist outside of the PWM space, you'll only be moved if they need you there.
During my S&T SA, they sent a trader to Singapore and he was livid. This English guy had never lived outside of the M25 let alone being moved to a country which in itself was the capital of the country. Safe to say he was mind fucked.
Must depend on the bank - where I am people often move between NY London and HK internally, its pretty common.
Of course but they don't move for the global relevance or better experience. Sometimes it makes sense for a bank to send someone experienced from London to HK if they've restructured a team and need a 2nd/3rd year analyst and/or someone more senior.
Disagree - know plenty of people who have applied internally and moved on their own accord.
Yet you are asking people on WSO what they think when you clearly have the best asset in your contacts book - those people.
Ultimately it seems that you have the decision to make. No one is going to tell you its worth moving because it worked out fine for them vs "don't move, its difficult." If you'r need to fulfil personal wants and experience a new market outweigh the negatives of having to establish yourself there, make the move. This kind of question is specific to where you work, how senior you are and what your goals are.
