I have an interview coming up and I pretty much expect a stock pitch question.
I was wondering if for sell-side it's best to go for a large/known company that is even covered by the same bank, and try to maximize the thesis creativity. Or present a truly unique and exotic special sit in an unknown foreign small cap.
Trying to balance between impressing and sticking to the role of ER in SS.

In my experience, it doesn’t matter. No one actually gives a shit about the company you pitch or the stance you take and its unlikely you’ll have a novel idea.
The point is to mostly see how you think and present your stance, answer follow ups, etc.
Thank you. I think that if I'm pitching something that they cover the follow-up will be tougher, while if I go with an obscure special sit they will have little to discuss.
Pitching a name under the analysts coverage is generally not a good idea. Also, if you’re good, then you should actually want them to have a lot to discuss. The Q&A is where the work you put in and your thinking is actually on display. Anyone can spew a simple pitch imo.
I agree with that, on the Q&A being the most important phase. Unfortunately, I don't know who will interview me and I'm not sure if they are the ones covering the name I'm pitching. I will make sure to be very prepared.

Pitch smaller caps, SS tends to cover larger caps (but there are small-cap specialists). I would pitch a US name if you are interviewing in the US tho. Avoid complicated thesis.
